The TERRIFYING Job of MG-42 Machine Gunners in WWII

A little after 6:30 on the morning of June 6, 1944, off a strip of French sand the planners had marked with the flat little word Omaha, a landing-craft ramp drops — and before a single man has taken a step, a sound none of them has a word for reaches them, a long tearing roar like a bolt of heavy cloth ripped end to end without stopping, and the front rank of the boat simply comes apart. It was not a secret weapon and not a wonder gun. It was a sheet of stamped steel and a belt of brass cartridges: the MG42, the German machine gun the Allies called Hitler's buzzsaw, and the whole hard story of the war is folded into the men who had to crouch behind it and the men who had to walk into it. This video tells the whole story of that gun — how it was made, how it was fought, and what it cost the men on both sides of it. It runs the engineering line from the water-cooled Maxim of the first war, through the jeweller's-work MG34 that was too fine and too slow to build, to the MG42, a weapon stamped and welded out of sheet steel like a car body in half the man-hours — cruder to look at, and more brutal and more reliable for it. It explains the number that made it a thing of dread — around 1,200 rounds a minute, twenty every second, coming faster than the ear can break them into separate shots — and the craft the films never show: the German squad built around the gun rather than the gun serving the squad, the short disciplined bursts, the scorching barrel swapped out in seconds, and the Lafette tripod that turned it into something close to light artillery, laid on fixed lines to rake a beach from the flank in interlocking "beaten zones." It walks onto Omaha itself, where a thin defence held for hours on the strength of the guns and the ground alone, and to Heinrich Severloh, the young gunner at WN 62 who became "the Beast of Omaha." And it keeps the cost in the frame without flinching — including the darkest chapter, the machine gun turned on unarmed civilians in the reprisal massacre at Kragujevac — and the human truth that the man behind the trigger was at once the deadliest and the most hunted soldier on the field, who very often broke under what his own hands were doing. It ends with the gun's long afterlife: the postwar MG3 still in service today, and the American M60 that borrowed its belt feed. A note on accuracy: this is a weapon-history piece drawn from the standard references and veteran accounts; specific figures — rate of fire, the roughly 400,000 built, the man-hours to make one — vary between sources. The gun, the general-purpose tactics, and the Kragujevac reprisal are all well documented. Two famous stories are handled here as exactly what they are: Severloh's own claim of 1,000 to 2,000 casualties is regarded by historians as implausible, since total Allied casualties across the whole of Omaha are estimated at around 2,400; and the tale of a soldier (usually named Josef Schulz) shot for refusing to fire on civilians is not borne out by the records. The M60 took the MG42's belt feed and the FG42's operating system — it was not a copy of either. If this kind of storytelling is what you're after, subscribing helps more of it reach people.
