25 Minutes of WW2 MYSTERIES You Didn't Know

Most of the Second World War's great mysteries were eventually closed. Somebody swept the right stretch of seabed, opened the right filing box, or matched a fragment of bone to a name. These seven never were. The greatest ocean liner afloat, burned and capsized at a New York pier, while Naval Intelligence quietly struck a bargain with a jailed crime boss to guard those same docks. A deputy leader who flew alone into enemy country and never gave an answer anyone believed. Anti-aircraft guns that fired at an empty sky for the better part of an hour. A navy blimp that drifted home with its engines running and its two-man crew simply gone. In this video, we count down seven mysteries from the Second World War that were never closed, and the last one is the strangest of them all. You will discover: ✓ Why the Deputy Führer of Germany flew alone to Scotland in the middle of the war, and how he really died as the last prisoner of Spandau ✓ What the guns of Los Angeles fired fourteen hundred shells at over the coast one night in 1942, when there was nothing there by morning ✓ How a navy patrol blimp came back to shore half-deflated with the door latched open, the parachutes still stowed, and both crewmen gone ✓ Why a sound aircraft carrying a prince of the royal family flew straight into a Scottish hillside in broad daylight ✓ How a quiet doll-shop owner on Madison Avenue hid the movements of American warships inside chatty letters about antique dolls ✓ What really blew up a Royal Navy escort carrier in home waters, and why the survivors were ordered to stay silent for the rest of their lives ✓ Whether the fire that killed the largest liner in the world was truly an accident, and the full price of the deal struck with Lucky Luciano The thread running through all seven is the same, and it is the opposite of a treasure story. These were not lost for want of looking. They were lost because the record itself was burned, sealed, or never written down at all. The files on Hess stayed closed for half a century. The officers over Los Angeles left sworn statements that flatly contradict each other. The blimp and the flying boat carried the one moment that mattered down with them, and left no witness behind. The doll shop closed its secret with a plea bargain before a jury ever heard it. The escort carrier took hers to the bottom under official silence. The burned liner shared hers with the men who ran her docks. Some of these have a tidy explanation on paper, a weather balloon, a navigational error, a careless spark. Each of those answers accounts for most of the night and satisfies most of the people. But in every single case there is a stubborn remainder, a latched door, a contradiction between two generals, a sealed inquiry, a survivor who spoke only to his family, that the official version has never quite absorbed. That remainder is why, decades on, these seven refuse to sit still. Most countdowns end with a solution. This one ends with seven questions that the people who could have answered them chose, for reasons of their own, to take to the grave. Tell us in the comments which of these seven you find hardest to let go of, and which one you think still has a real answer waiting somewhere in a sealed file.
