Every hobby has a value for money option that's universally beloved no matter how deep into the hole you go.
For watches, the F91W, for bourbon it's Buffalo Trace, for sports cars it's the MX5/Miata, and for pens it's the Kakuno.

It's my favorite fountain pen,. Never one issue. Most trouble free fountain pen I've ever had.

Thanks for showing us all the families of these pens. This was new information to me! I have the Drowsy Ivory model in a medium nib. I own Kaweco and Lamy pens with a variety of extra nibs, so I'm familiar with those lines. I bought the Kakuno because I wanted to experience a Pilot nib. I agree with all your comments. It's a pleasure to write with! One thing I'll add is I find the plastic material has a surprisingly pleasant feel to it.

I just started getting into fountain pens a year ago, and the pen that started the journey was the Kakuno Madoromi (light blue) - had to order it from Etsy because it was sold out everywhere else. Now I have four of the five colors, one medium nib and the rest fine nibs. I absolutely love those pens, they write smoothly and don't ever dry out. Thanks for a great video!

21:32 that’s pretty common among the bigger brands actually! The LAMY safari nib is compatible with the Al-Star, Joy, Lx, and I think some more of their lower price pens too.

It’s honestly nice because if you want to invest in a nicer pen body, you can swap the nibs for relatively cheap. I have a Prera and a metropolitan and I bought them both in fine before I realized I prefer the pilot medium nibs. So now I also have two Kakunos so I could steal the medium nibs from them haha

It helps that it's a Pilot using a Pilot ink. They're made for each other!

Great pen for quick notes and sketching/drawing. Good toss around pen and not so pricey that you’ll worry about it getting scratched or nicked.

Great video topic! I 100% agree that a humble fountain pen offers writing experiences as valuable and worthwhile compared to more expensive pens. Price is not a necessary indicator of the writing experience quality. Before I started using fountain pens, I thought the more expensive pens were "better" but after using pens from a wide spectrum of cost, I found that regardless of the price, pens offer a different experience. My favorite pens span in cost from the Lamy Safari and Platinum Plaisir to the Pilot Custom 823 and Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age. For me, the Safari taught me how to write with fountain pens, and without that pen, I would still be frustrated with my other more expensive pens.
