Worked as a Hospice RN. An elderly beautiful woman lying in her last days - friends, husband had passed. She seemed so frustrated lying in that hospice bed. She stated, she wished she had gotten rid of so much, stuff. Now knowing others ( kids, sons and daughter in laws…. And their helpful friends ) would be going through all of her personal belongings. These thoughts did not bring her peace in her final days. I learned a valuable lesson that day and thank her.

I don't want anyone else going through my things. I'd rather do it myself.

My son told me that none of my children wanted my stuff. Rather than be offended, I was liberated. I thanked him:)

I read once of an elderly couple who were going to travel the world in retirement and intended on doing a Swedish death cleaning. Before though, they asked their children if they wanted anything and were surprised to learn how little they did want. The truth: nobody really wants your stuff because they have their own stuff.

I’m just giggling that Vivian was not only a full time school teacher, but also in the corporate world and able to do commercial cooking for these giant dinners… like this was one accomplished woman…. 😮😅😂

Now 70, I did this at age 62 when I downsized from a near 3k sq ft home to 770 sq ft. home with no garage. A major challenge because my home was the hub for all sorts of gatherings. I went through this process about 5 times. As time wore on I realized there simply was no space for some of the things I had hoped to find space and purpose for. It's simply been an on-going process for me. Each year I eliminate a bit more. Since downsizing, my home is no longer the gathering hub. I am now the 5th wheel at other gatherings. I still enjoy antiquing but if I buy something that means something has to go immediately. I've always groomed my clothes closet 2X a year so still when I buy a new item, another item MUST be donated. It takes strength and courage to be an elder. One must seek new opportunities. ♥️

I use the 'What if I died and officialdom had to sort through my things' tactic. So no holey socks or underwear gets to stay, no old bedding, no junk mail etc. Whoever does sort through my things will have a nice job, everything I have is clean and in good order. It's nice to have less.

"She gave herself permission to be wrong about a few items rather than stay trapped by indecision about everything." That really resonated with me..
