Thank you for acknowledging how this affects libraries. We lend video games to thousands of people who can't afford to buy every new release, and a digital-only future could effectively end library video game collections. As a librarian who manages a public library’s game collection, I really appreciate you bringing attention to this side of the issue.

when i read the news the first thing i thought of was my library not being able to stock new games when this happens. glad to see you bringing it up, as so many people aren't even aware that their local libraries MAY have physical game copies.

One note on libraries: from my experience working in them, checking out an ebook via libby etc costs the library way more money than just checking out physical books over the lifespan of the book, even if the physical book is only ever checked out a few times before being retired because publishers are very aggressive with ebook licensing costs. Most libraries still love when you check a book out regardless because circulation statistics are how they justify themselves to municipalities etc, but if you don't have a strong preference, go for the physical book.

I'm a librarian and order video games for an entire county system and I just want to say how appreciative I am of your words about libraries. We are struggling not just with the transition of video games to a digital format, but also with books, movies, and audio. Our budgets cannot keep up with the ever-increasing costs of digital media and these publishers often charge libraries 5-6 times more than retail for digital access for something like an eBook.

I work at a library and the day after the announcement my colleagues were already discussing in our forum how we would handle that. Because the codes in the boxes most definitely won’t work! Thank you for bringing us up, I sadly haven’t seen people mention it much yet. Also, I appreciate your general inside into this issue a ton! So thank you! :D

Thank you for mentioning libraries. That is the only reason I got a PS5 with the disk drive. It has saved me many hundreds of dollars.

My son and I used to get games from our local library all the time. That's how we'd try out games before buying.

One other aspect is advertising. When there is a single storefront to purchase, the store ads shown get more valuable, and the costs go up. So, expect more ads, and more revenue from the ads. A digital path means they make money even if you never spend a dime.
