Not to many songs get a sequel but this does. And its called Sequel. I highly recommend this as the story comes full circle.

I saw Harry Chapin live in concert in 1979 and he performed this song! He was a very prolific singer-storyteller. And yes, the audience rose to its feet with applause until we all just never sat down again! 👏 👏 👏

He was one of the finest story tellers in song. I saw him live and the crowd hung silently on every word he sang. Amazing.

I was at work in 1981 when Harry was killed. I heard it on the radio. He wasn't that big in Australia, except for a couple of songs that were short enough to sneak onto the radio. I had been introduced to him through a boyfriend in the '70's and have loved his music all my life. When I heard he died I just cried and cried and not one soul where I worked knew who this magical, musical storyteller was or why his loss cut so deep. I still cry sometimes when I remember that day. I also can't fathom people who listen but don't hear the messages in Harry's music. Glad to see all the Harry Chapin lovers here.

Harry Chapin is the GOAT of story telling songs.  My husband and I were fortunate to see him in person several times in MA during the 70's.  We finally scored front row tickets to see him again; I was driving home from work when I heard he had passed from a tragic car accident.  The world lost a beautiful man. singer, and story teller.

The part where she over-tipped him was not comedy. It was the saddest part of the whole story. It showed he had given up on being a man and no longer considered himself worthy of her or even worthy of one last magnanimous gesture. When he "stashed the bill in his shirt," he realized that he had been reduced to being just a stoned cab driver. That was the line that made the song. One of the greatest story tellers ever, Harry Chapin. BTW, pronounced with a long A, "Chaypin"

He was such a great story teller. Such a bitter sweet song. The part when she says "Harry keep the change " gets me every time. Great suggestion Kansan. Great reaction Harri!
