En fait, il est né en France, à Lyon, le 5 novembre 1895, son père étant un éminent entomologiste allemand. Pendant l&apos;enfance du pianiste, la famille a beaucoup voyagé en France et en Italie, et il a reçu une éducation privée. Bien qu&apos;il commence à jouer à quatre ans, il ne commence l&apos;enseignement systématique qu&apos;à seize ans, au Conservatoire de Hanovre. Les débuts de Gieseking ont lieu en moins d&apos;un an, et à vingt ans, il donne un cycle presque complet des sonates pour piano de Beethoven.<br>-<br>Sa carrière est interrompue par la Première Guerre mondiale, mais il se fait rapidement remarquer par ses programmes aventureux, dont des partitions de Szymanowski, Schoenberg, Busoni et Hindemith, alors peu familières. Il se produit pour la première fois à Londres en 1923, à New York en 1926 et à Paris en 1928. Depuis lors et jusqu&apos;à sa mort - à Londres le 26 octobre 1956 - Gieseking a connu une renommée et un succès mondial. Malgré le raffinement exceptionnel de ses interprétations d&apos;œuvres françaises, son répertoire s&apos;étendit bien au-delà et, contrairement à certaines personnalités internationales comparables, il s&apos;écouta attentivement jusqu&apos;à la fin. Un exemple caractéristique de sa puissance et de son envergure est cet ensemble complet de toute la musique pour piano solo de Mozart.   Every time I listened to other pianists’ works, I always come back to listen to Gieseking’s Mozart. There’s something special about his Mozart.

  One thing I really like about Gieseking is his judgment in where to compromise with technical challenges. Other pianists, striving never to lose a note, will make tiny slow-downs in the tough spots. That jerkiness drives me nuts. Gieseking doesn&apos;t miss a beat. He plows through at the expense of an occasional dropped or slurred note. His way preserves the flow and the power.

  Thank you,thank you sooooo much!!! This is,in my opinion,the best recording of Mozart solo piano music EVER!! This velvet touch,the incredible legato almost without pedal,the incredible mix of sparkles and melancholy...he is unique! (Alfred Brendel is my other go-to pianist, whenever I want to listen to an otherwordly Mozart performance. Unfortunately he recorded only a selection of the solo-piano music...but,thanks God, he also recorded all the great piano concertos,and that is another sublime set of records!)<br>Thank you for giving us those precious Gieseking recordings in this difficult moment for the whole world...it&apos;s like a shining ray of sun appearing among dark clouds!!

  Ne pas oublier que son nom finit par &quot;king&quot; ! Un pianiste véritablement &quot;royal&quot; dans Mozart.<br>Un Mozart sans fioritures, avec des tempi rigoureux et très peu de pédale.
