Claudio Arrau was a Chilean pianist, known for covering a vast repertoire of the Baroque period. He was considered one o the greatest pianists of twentieth century. He is a prodigy for music as he read music before understanding the normal writing. At the age of four, he read Beethoven’s sonatas and gave his first concert at the age of five. He proceeded with his musical studies, interrupting them with public presentations, recitals, etc. He was considered in 20th century as one of the world’s authorities on the interpretation of Beethoven’s music. He dies in Austria at the age of 88.<br>Beethoven’s sonatas are considered the greatest cycle of piano performances to date. It can be considered the bridge between salon music and the presented publicly. Hans Bülov was the first pianist to perform them all in a single concert cycle. It is common to consider this type of music in three different phases, the first with a marked influence of Haydn and Mozart (first 15 sonatas). A second period as he wrote to Wenzel Krumpholz, which would be a very different period from the previous one with significant changes to the format of the previous period. Finally, in a third period the interpretation and structure is more complex, often employing the fugue technique (sonatas 28 to32). The 29 requires significant technique, having been considerable untouchable until Listz performed it in a concert when he was 15 years old. They are masterpieces of composition with unforgettable moments of musical harmony. If they are listened to with due attention, they contain in them the deep emotion of the human race. The interpretation is magnificent and fabulous, as Sir Colin Davies say “His sound is amazing, and it is entirely his own….no one else has it exactly that way”.

For me Claudio Arrau is the greatest all-rounder of the twentieth century. He is a pianist who interprets a phenomenally wide repertoire with sure sensitivity and finesse, with feeling and knowledge, and with a practiced mastery of touch. Unlike any other pianist I've ever heard he is equally at home with Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt and Debussy, and communicates directly with you the audience. None of the present superstars, perhaps with only one or two exceptions, has his depth and ability, range and understanding. Often there is a great divide between the Classic and Romantic repertoire. Arrau always bridges that gap. This is a great upload of his superb Beethoven recordings that perhaps form the foundation of his technique. The wonderful new mastering makes this remarkable performance so much more accessible and deserved ... for which heartfelt gratitude.

I have several complete sets of Beethoven's sonatas. By far the best of them all is the one on Philips by Claudio Aarau. His tempos are always exactly right for every movement, and every moment within the movements. His rubato is totally natural, never exaggerated. He achieves a wonderful depth of tone and his phrasing is incomparable. Bravo Aarau!

I've come to this video again and again during college. Claudio Arrau and Beethoven have helped me study late into the night for exams, and they have helped me complete projects and reports. Now, I'm studying for my last round of finals for my undergrad degree, and here I am once again

Arrau’s hero in life and art was Franz Liszt. That master’s breadth, his nobility and molten tone all came to the fore in his grandpupil’s playing. Beethoven was not a consuming interest for the young Chilean; his manager urged him to assume that mantle when Arrau left Berlin and needed to be accepted in America as a European rather than a dapper Latin. By the same token Arrau did not feel confident playing much Liszt again until his career was securely reestablished. Yet devotion to Liszt always informed Arrau’s Beethoven - the Weimar Liszt of seriousness and generosity. It is no longer fashionable to idolize Beethoven but you will again after hearing this. Thanks for sharing.

When YouTube recommendations actually work. I can't even fathom the amount of effort that went into compiling this. Love it.
