  The Ft 818 was and is still my favorite field radio.  Very few bells and whistles but it gets the job done on all bands, on all modes with a great form factor and rugged case.  I knew it's replacement would follow the inverse square law for the fundamental practicality of field operations...................for me.

  A good friend loaned me his FTX-1 Field radio for a few weeks for evaluation. There are a couple of good points about the rig, but it’s no FT-857D (more like a FT-897D, TBH).<br><br>An all-mode VHF/UHF dual receiver with APRS, GPS, sound card, tuner, and video out port (all contained in a similar size to the FT-891) would IMO be an instant winner that could dominate the market for years to come.

  I had hoped (not expected) that Yaesu would come out with a radio with the features and the form factor of an Elecraft KX2, but at a Yaesu price. However, with the popularity of the IC-705 I understand why the brought another “all things to all people” radio to the market.

  Without batteries: The FTX-1F is 6.3 ounces (180 grams) or ~17% heavier than the IC-705.<br>• &nbsp;With batteries (6.1 Ah for FTX-1F, equivalent for IC-705): The FTX-1F is 9.4 ounces (265 grams) or ~16.34% heavier than the IC-705.<br>• &nbsp;With standard 3.3 Ah battery for IC-705: The FTX-1F is ~1 pound (453 grams) heavier.

  I love the FTX-1, sure it needs a firmware update but so does every new product when it first comes out these days. It’s perfect for base station or for portable QRP.

  Let’s be honest… they rushed the release for Hamvention. It has problems, I still REALLY want one, the fact that the Optima can be a base station AND a QRP field radio is awesome… I’m glad I waited but I am anxious to get my hands on one.<br><br>Having been in the Marine Corps during the early days of GWOT I can say that radio is light as all get out… <br><br>You can EASILY put that in a pack and make it manpack radio. Yall never had to hump an old PRC-119… those old SINCGARS radios were absolute cinder blocks

  I&apos;m not a field operator and I prefer a base setup. &nbsp;What I would like to see from Yaesu is an updated version or Gen-2 of the FT-991A with a screen size of the FTX-1 and with the same 3D Scope display and menu. &nbsp;An external display port would be nice as well but not necessary.<br>I like the 991A but I just don&apos;t like the screen and menu layout. &nbsp;And it&apos;s roughly a $400 price jump from the 991A to the FTX-1 Optima. &nbsp;Woof.

  Sounds like Yaesu needs a group of beta tester hams to hammer their new products before release.
