This was a great video. I have an FT-710 Regret selling my 891 so I am portable shopping again. Appreciate this!

Great video, Chuck! You already know my preference, but having competition and options is a good thing. I actually have a video coming on tomorrow on an update to the SDR-Control iPhone app that now allows for wireless APRS on the Icom 705--1200 baud and even 300 baud for HF.

I purchased the FTX-1 Optima and all the options before they came out. After having to send the radio in for repair in the first week, I realized that this was the first new radio I regreted buying. HOWEVER, I haven't had time to play with it for at least 8 months. Now that things have settled down I plan on updating to the newest firmware and giving it another chance!!! It wasn't that I didn't like the radio, menus, receiver etc, just that i had issues right out of the box. Just got bummed. New QTH with a HOA so now I'll go portable and play in the nice weather thats coming. Thanks for the honest review Chuck!

I have a Collins KWS-2 for portable and mobile use. It came with a Samsonite case to carry it. Good enough for the CIA in SE Asia, good enough for me! (It is fun to haul it to a field day event with the military NVIS antenna)
Based on your video, I would probably go with the Yahoo. The modularity is the key to me.

This video definitely has influenced my decision. I have been wanting one of these, and Yaesu makes more sense.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned that the IC-705 was the best radio that you had ever heard. My opinion was the opposite. I couldn't stand the way it sounded. I hated the scratchy, tinny sound that it put out. It seemed no matter what I tried (filtering, noise reduction, etc) I couldn't get it to sound the way I wanted. So, I sold it, and ultimately ended up with the FTX-1. Granted, it has the same scratchy, tinny sound. BUT, I can now fix that with the filtering, and audio settings, and it sounds great. Yaesu's DSP is AMAZING!

I also didn't buy the tuner, because I wasn't sure if I needed it. I was also unsettled by Mike's (K8MRD) test on it. So, I look forward to you testing it. I'd like to see how well it works for you, which might sway my decision to buy one for myself.

Again, thanks for the video. Very informative.

Built in GPS on 705 is very handy for getting quick maidenhead grid information for logs/pota activation.
Also the FTX 1 runs hotter while doing FT8/FT4 vs the 705 which is 🧊 cold.
Also the Bluetooth on the 705 makes connection to a portable Bluetooth speaker so so nice.
