  100% someone was bored. Playing with clay around the fire. Perhaps they use it for mortar for the fire pit rocks? That guy or gal threw it in the fire and found it later. Wedged perfectly because of playing with it. Fired well even if it cracked or split. An idea was formed. That’s my thoughts on it. What do you think?

  The thought of hunter-gatherers 20,000 years ago during the Ice Age using clay pots to boil broth to get through brutal winters is insane [<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZbTlOUCWOU&amp;t=156">02:36</a>]. Crazy to think how simple heat and mud literally helped shape our survival.

  Essentially: A significant portion of early humans were genetically predisposed to be pyromaniacs, and loved burning things. And sometimes, burning things made them interesting. And eventually, one of the curious humans (who may or may not have also been a pyromaniac) noticed the interesting thing, and tried to recreate it.

  Vessels were made before pottery, too. They use to carve vessels out of stone. Some stone vessels could be used as cooking pots, too.

  Two things to note here. One is that grinding grains, seeds, and legumes into flour and mixing it with water, will produce a paste that can be cooked on a flat rock. This technique preceded cooking pots by a great measure.<br>As far as the earliest discoveries about firing clay, I suspect it was a condition where a fire was built on clay, and later people found the fired pieces underneath.

  people always act like ancient people were stupid, but in fact it is modern man that has gone stupid. a long time ago some one built a fire on some clay, and after, someone saw the ground and went hey that is useful, and pottery was born. it was not some magic moment where suddenly someone had the idea to burn dirt and make a pot.

  A little clay exposed to fire or sunlight, and pottery was invented. That is why many peoples around the world made the same discovery

  The one theory I read about was that pottery came from basket making. At some point baskets were lined with clay to hold water and someone left one too close to a fire.

  I think the first time humans transformed one substance into another happened thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of years earlier—namely when wood was burned and, in certain areas where oxygen was excluded, charcoal, or essentially pure carbon, was formed. That, too, is a transformation of one substance into another.
