  Before potatoes were known in Europe turnips were an important food in the Hellenistic and Roman world. In Finland potatoes began gradually to replace commonly cultived turnips since the 1760s, and they became the dominant root vegetables during the 19th century. The first Finnish potatoes were connected to the Pomeranian War (1757-1762) between Sweden and Prussia. When the Finnish soldiers in Sweden&apos;s army returned to home, they brought some potatoes with them.
