If you want more P3R analysis, I looked at Episode Agis back when it launched, you can check that out here! https://youtu.be/N_nJJ-4Au0Y?si=xAz-Kh_tB85gqbJO

45:54 I think most of the problems in the cutscenes stem from P3Portable. Since that game had to lessen the visual presentation, a lot of dialogue was added.
I specifically remember the new dialogue in Reload from Portable, even the Yukari dialogue in the introduction cutscene.

I played portable first back in 2020, so I'm pretty sure Reload used Portable's script for some reason.

I love how unnecessarily hard you went with the sound editing on the toy story bit, good shit

One thing I noticed that is small but still bothers me is the changes to kens awakening. It feels like the removal of the of animation there and change of location ruins the atmosphere.

Just a little thing but I love the use of the Sonic CD Jp soundtrack in the background. My favorite ost of all time!👍

great video! I am especially glad for the analysis and comparisons of the anime cutscenes. I remember spending an evening making a sloppy, shortened and reframed edit of the post nyx fight cutscene, attempting to make it more faithful to the og cutscenes.i noticed how boring the shot composition was and how shallow the cutscene was despite being *longer*.

One thing I especially came to see, was how it removed another integral part of the parallels between makoto and yukari. in the way they mirrored the very first cutscene in the game. in the og cutscene of the final battle, everything you see is from yukaris POV, the camera is low on the ground and always looks up or remains on the characters level, showing how stuck the party feels in the situation. it uses the dutch angle effectively as it represents distress and chaos and unease. makoto walking off comes as a big shock because we are watching things from yukaris pov. she gets the most closeups and was set up as our pov from the first frames (her eyes opening).
later in the cutscene yukaris pov gets shifted to makoto's where now the shot opens through the reflection of his eye.

meanwhile in reload, everything I said before has been lost. you no longer have shots from the ground or opening through the eyes of the characters or angles that embody the chaos. you no longer have the pov shift between yukari and makoto. you no longer feel like youre part of the characters. Sure it's shiny but in the end it comes down to simply being clutter on the screen to distract you how boring it is to watch. Of course we cannot ignore the worse4 dialogue too.

Just because they follow the same plot beats and accomplish the story on a technicality, doesnt mean that you wont lose important artistic choices, because most people think artistic choices are a. accidentally and b. not that important. They like to pretend they weren't important, when they were part of shaping your experience.
-
On the last point of the video...oof....well we have now seen several choices done by atlus already. Including cowardly ones with the most pathetic excuses made by Wada regarding p4r.

Honestly my biggest worry and one I hold visible dread over are the potential remake for persona 1, and especially persona 2 duology. Frankly, I do not want it to be modern persona. It's unlikely to have a calendar system as a. that wouldn't make sense with the story and b. because that would require an actual new vision and take that atlus is too cowardly to take. They only care about giving easier games with "better" graphics and make sure they can flex their UI and UX design; which, while I love generally, I have found severally troubling for accessibility as the constant flashing and changed in pops of color during battles gave me headaches and hurt my eyes. They do not offer you options to turn off flashing or reduce them and actively exclude a part of people for in the process, which this constant flashing could be very harmful physically. But as long as they hide behind a "this game may include flashing" warning then they never need to change or make compromises.

Back on P2, i don't want them to further censor or try to "polish" systems of that era. I dont want the games easier. I want them to be done in a way that represent the themes of persona 2: rumors. That system was often jank and frustrating but it worked in the gameplay of it's themes as you had to navigate around it similiar to having to navigate in real life through baseless or harmful rumors.

Very long comment aside. I fear for this company and their priorities, I have given up on these games and not purchased them since soul hackers 2. (me, one of the five people that played it) because i grew tired of the rereleases. SMTV rerelease was the straw that broke the back because I just sat there infuriated over having spent 60 bucks while everywhere around me says how much better vengeance is and i was like "screw this, why am I even buying anything atp." I didn't even know og smtv was taken down from stores. That is nuts to me. You saying I own a relative modern game that cannot be purchased anymore? Wow. Honestly the thing ive been saying for years, is that more people SHOULD pirate and emulate, and I will continue to stand by that statement.

I found this video at the perfect time, a couple weeks ago I started a playthrough of the original persona 3 on ps2, and couldn't get out of my mind that reload exists. I was trying to avoid Reload since it came out as I knew that I loved the old game but really felt like I was missing out on something. I knew that I often abandon remakes half way through a playthrough, not really because I hate them but because at some point I start losing interest and forget to open them again. I put persona 3 on hold and started playing reload and to say the least the game felt odd. it didn't feel as if I was playing persona 3, but more like I was just experiencing it on autopilot, I wanted to keep playing and I really wanted to enjoy the game. I kept hearing people say it's the best way to play it and didn't want to feel like a stubborn person that replays the same version and ignores something other people have connected with. I really didn't want to dismiss those experiences, but it got to the point where I was more concentrated on that aspect than on actually playing a game, that's when I found this video in my recommended and I think it opened my eyes a lot about the way I see video games and I really think that without watching this I would still be stuck in forcing myself to experience a version of one of the games I love that simply wasn't enjoyable to me. You have lifted a weight of my shoulders and for that I am thankful
