Persona 4 Is Darker Than You Remember

I think the bad endings really really show the dark undertones.
The fact allowing Magatsu Inaba to overtake the real Inaba is way darker than the game even suggests.
Adachi calls it a “quick and painless” situation where mankind would just turn into shadows. But it’s actually a blood curling experience.
The shadows literally brutally kill everyone in Inaba as we can hear from Naotos scream when she dies.

"Why are you giving a spoiler warning about an 18 year old" because there will be people playing it that were just born when it was new.

I feel like it's also important to remember that the English localization of persona 4 is completely different from the Japanese script for example in the English localization a persona is called a facade but in the Japanese script it's called armor of the personality

Inaba is one of the best locations in all of persona. Aside from the story and the cast, also the era was arguably the best time, the one right before digital phones, where people still went to hang out in real life making the crimes hit closer to home and keep you close to the story.

Another great video!

Another darker thing about Persona 4 is when you fail to rescue the other party members or fail to stop the end of the world a lot of dark things happens. Like with the failure to stop the end of the world Naoto calls saying a lot of weird things are going on and then she screams during her call.

Marie is well written when you understand that she and Yu are literally intertwined on a Japanese mythological level!

Really big and long essay comment incoming:

Marie is awesome and everyone is wrong about her. You made a whole point about how memories affect how we interact with the world and the framing of our reality while glossing over the character whose entire story is written around the concept of memories and living without them. Marie is lost in this world and looks to you and the investigation team for guidance to understand it. Throughout the social link though she forms memories with you and her friends. Marie’s poems often allude to themes of being lost in this world (Sea Foam+Fly!), being captured by the beauty of the world and people (You Killed Me+Eternal Midnight), learning to love reality over the illusions people live with everyday (All You Clowns + My list), and finding the resolve to be reborn as a truly free spirit who is no longer feeling lost (Fallen Angel+RELEASE YOURSELF).

Eventually she comes to understand that what she has lost can be replaced. This understanding gives resolution to this inner conflict that she is sensitive about. Which is why she likes to berate you when things don’t go her way . As you alluded to, it's how she chooses to avoid unpacking her more complicated emotions. She is however blunt and open about her simpler emotions and reactions including boredom, disinterest and frustration, this from Marie’s preference for reality over wearing a mask. Her arc in the third semester is uncovering the missing truth she had previously made peace with. This “truth” (which isn’t fully explained to her by her memory) that her existence puts humanity in danger is a truth that almost ruins her. But it's the memories that you both made together as a friend group that let you cope with this truth. She understands by the end of that arc that their relationship is as real as snow. So she chooses to live with that reality.

Its weird you don’t really talk much about the true ending (if you're avoiding spoilers that is understandable but its kinda important to bring it up when discussing Marie). Because I think Izanami is an interesting character. Especially with the lens Marie adds in Golden. Izanami in Japanese mythology is the sister/wife of Izanagi. They created Japan, and bore many god children, Izanami then died giving birth to Kagutsuchi and went to the underworld (Yomi). Izanagi went down to the underworld to bring her back but was horrified to see Izanami become this walking talking rotting corpse covered in maggots. So he ran away, which upset Izanami so she swore she would bring death to the people of the land while Izanagi swore to bring life to counterbalance it. Izanami basically became the kami who brought death to the world. The moral of the story being mainly to leave the dead in peace and not to disturb them.

Now let's look at P4. In P4 Izanami was a maternal goddess who cared for the land and its people; however she witnessed them become disillusioned and no longer interested in truth. (This is implied to be commenting on how the onset of the information age, the internet and “reality TV” has spread misinformation to the point that truth is a lower priority to humans than amusement and confirmation bias). This development to Izanami is that humanity has “died” since they have disconnected from reality. So she answers it by manifesting the fog they desire to conceal the truth. Setting up Adachi, Namatame and Yu to bring it about by creating an entertaining/validating game for three players and a show for everyone else.

It is only by being so determined for the truth and having the resolve from your bonds to overcome the hardship (such as a giant scary goddess of the dead) to reveal it that you impress Izanami to the point that they believe in humanity again and spares them. You don’t use some sudden great seal. You don’t ask a demon lord to help by shooting the bad guy. You save the world by proving her wrong.

Izanami is even more interesting with Golden. Marie is supposed to be an aspect of Izanami that loves and cares for humanity. The aspect that Izanami discarded in order to commit to killing everyone. So after defeating Izanami, Marie is whole again with the memories of her time with you.

P4’s story is far from perfect but I love how it handles its themes. I can go over the metanarrative for hours and I probably will make another long comment on that sorry.

5:17 it would be really cool if you covered P4 PS2's atmosphere at some point because I do think it doesn't quite match this description. But I think there's also nuance to it because it is dull but it is also still colorful in other areas. It's just... different in a very interesting way.

I know you talk a bit about it, but I don't think the visuals of P4G differing from P4 are due to hardware limitations but rather due to the form factor of the Vita and also a general art direction change. When we were developing the fog restoration mod, we found that we could just port a lot of the visual elements to Vita without much trouble.

I remember always purposely having alternate save files to check what a failed deadline cutscene would look like for Persona 4(and 5 which led to funny results) and I still remember the December dungeon failed deadline cutscene. I didn’t expect to hear Naoto’s being over taken by shadows. That scream is in my memory bank for years now.

Slllight correction. Yosuke's father isnt the owner of Junes. He is the manager of the new branch of the Junes Market Chain that openned in inaba.
