I'm retiring in 2 years at age 62. Wife is a SAHW and will be age 61. Our goal is for my DROP account to only have 40% of the starting balance remaining after the first 10 years of retirement (Go-Go years), then spend the remaining 40% over the next 15 years after that.
This'll get me to age 87 and my wife to age 86. If one or both of us live longer, we'll have a Roth account that we allowed to grow untouched over those 25 years. And if neither of us are around at ages 87/86, then our children will inherit the rest, which will help them in their own retirements.
Very simple, stable plan.

Especially in today's market you wouldn't even be spending down your account since the stock market is raging🎉

Very good episode guys. I appreciate the way you presented multiple angles on this tough subject of spending more sooner than later.

Only way I feel comfortable spending money is when I just spend the dividends and distributions from assets I hold, without selling any shares or units.

If you can receive about 70K / year from this method without reducing number of assets, then I would feel comfortable.

You’re talking about the 4 to 7% withdrawal rate, but you didn’t say how much the account balance was so you might not be able to spend that much if you don’t have much in there

Great video but I'm still left with a few questions about guardrails.

If I use the guardrail approach how do I set my starting percentage and upper/lower rails?

If I hit the upper rail do I reduce to the lower?

Do I change the dollar value for each rail if my portfolio value changes?

Maybe I'm missing something but what i see so far in guardrails is ultimately an effort to keep my portfolio value relatively constant. Is that right?

Thanks in advance to anyone with further insight.
