The last time Dr. Kennedy was on , when she said to build the kids confidence by saying I believe you, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

9:36 this really touched me. I'm a single dad who's trying to be everything for my kid (soft, assertive, positive, safe port, disciplinarian, buddy, friend...) and these conversations are always so hard and touching.

Guilt is a feeling we have when we act out of alignment with our values. So simple yet so amazing.

"Information doesn't scare kids, as much as the absence of information. It's the lack of story around emotions that scares kids. Pain with a lack of coherent narrative or support is what scares kids." Whoa, that hit hard. Anyone else grow up with practically zero information from your parents?

It was as if my parents and I lived parallel realities. No real connected communication. That put me on a path of becoming deeply interested in effective, genuine, heart-centered communication with everyone in my life. My life work even came out of that childhood rubble.

One thing that stood out to me is the implied conviction/assumption that if one isn’t amazing and outstanding in something, they should accept that they don’t have the natural aptitude for some arbitrary success in that area and move on to something else (when Andrew was sharing about not being a good musician) - it stood out because it seems to be grounded in an non-adaptive notion that we should primarily strive for things that we can be really good at, thus perpetuating the achievement focused culture, discounting the power (and benefit) of continuing pursuit of something for the sake of enjoyment and fulfillment (even without achievement). With Andrew’s example about music - continuing with music if it brings joy is just as worthwhile as continuing with it if it brings recognition. Achievement potential shouldn’t be the main determinant in the continuation of a pursuit.

After listening to the first 1.5 hours of the podcast I coincidentally found myself in a hard moment with my 10 year old during a homework struggle. After a little trial and error but staying steady in my role as “anchor” and “pilot” she came out the other side with calm, homework done, and even a little joy. I’ve been patting myself on the back for the past day — there is real, transformative wisdom here.

This 3-hour episode it's like a 'how to swim' class that requires you to swim across the pool to get the lesson.

When she’s talking about feeling sad and how to explain that to a child. Starting with praise that you noticed that and she explains it like how Dr. Rogers used to talk to us. I miss Dr. Rogers. He modeled this to so many kids!
