  To say that Anne of Austria’s marriage started a precedent is not entirely correct. It was the first uncle-niece marriage for Habsburgs, but it wasn’t at all in Iberia. Plenty of marriages during Reconquista involved very close unions. Bastards of royals married back into main royal lines barely separated by one generation. Isabel of Portugal (mother of Isabel I of Castile) was product of uncle-niece marriage. First Iberian marriages of Habsburgs were all double first cousins. Maria Anna of Bavaria married her uncle Charles II, Archduke of Austria (this happened within a year from Anna of Austria’s marriage) and then insisted that her niece with the same name married her own son.

  Looking at the pictures that were shown, that chin was already present in the family way before that little girl was even conceived. You can't blame that on her.😮

  Again, I am absolutely loving your focus on Habsburg consorts lately. I see the wonderful portraits of these women so much in my art books but I know so little about them. Thank you for telling us more of their lives behind the pictures. <3

  It's crazy to think that if maybe one or two of them didn't marry their family it probably wouldn't have been as bad! I'm just surprised it took them so long to figure out that this may be a bad idea!

  Thanks, I enjoyed that. The Habsburg's really had it all, but their focus on intermarriage worked against them in the end.
