Japan’s Impossible Runway: Building on 1,165 Steel Legs in the Sea

Haneda Runway D: Japan Built a Runway on 1,165 Steel Legs in the Sea Tokyo's Haneda Airport had run out of room. The only place left for a fourth runway was in the sea, and part of that site sat right in the mouth of the Tama River. A solid island would have blocked the river. So Japan built something no major airport had attempted at this scale: a hybrid runway. Two thirds of it stands on reclaimed land. The other third stands on a steel platform of 198 prefabricated jackets, resting on 1,165 steel piles driven up to 90 m deep, so the river and tides can keep flowing underneath.
