You know this video reminded me how cool it would be if someone brought back the idea of having a thematic restaurant integraded into a ride like the Blue Bayou.

In general I think Disneyland pirates is better, but one pacing thing I love at MK is that the drop puts you right into the battle. It's a more thrilling way to join the battle scene than just turning a corner.

IMHO, Disneylands Pirates is the standard all of the other Pirates should be compared to. Yes the Shanghai version is spectacular but it lacks the charm of the Disneyland version.

Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean clocks in at an incredible 15.5 minutes — verses WDW’s 8.5 minutes

The pacing just feels better, you really feel the "pause points" where Disney just wanted you to sit back and let things develop before the action

This wasn’t tedious at all. I love this type of videos. I wish I could visit these attractions often enough to make the same observations. I have never been to Disneyland, however. Only Disneyland Paris (many, many times) and Disney World (twice, in 1992 and 2022). I have also been to Hong Kong Disneyland but it was back in 2009 so I don’t think it’s quite the same anymore.

There used to be mermaids in the Disney world version of the ride. Installed in October 2012, over a year after the fourth movie came out, it only took a day to add the props in. There were underwater projections of mermaids swimming, a siren song on the beach, and a mermaid skeleton from a wrecked boat. It was a popular addition but it never made its way to Disneyland. There was a problem, the underwater projections would sometimes not work and show an error sign, at some point it turned off. In 2016, a glass coffin was added to the beach scene, but it didn’t last because in 2018, all mermaid props were removed. Though people are glad the projection is gone, they are upset with the removal of the mermaid skeleton and the song. It’s been years since they’ve become lost props, and fans want them back, and to come to Disneyland, I hope they come there too, because it would be good for the rides 60th anniversary happening in March 2027, and besides nobody is happy with the new treasure skeleton, plus the mermaid props are easy to add and they don’t cost a lot of money.

Disneyland’s ship battle does have a fog effect. It’s frequently not turned on, but every once in a while you do see it.

I always took the line at MK to be us, the rider, walking through an old ruined spanish fort. (fitting for florida) as we descend down, we get further from the parts that have been cleaned up/picked over by looters, and arrive at some magical/ghostly part. the chess players being our window into what went down at this fort. from the time we board we are now in their memories/imagining what happened at the fort.

Similar to how many theorize the blue-bayou banjo player is telling us about his pirate days and thats what the ride is... I think the ghosts of the chess players (real ghosts or our imaginations) are telling us what happened with the pirates who used the fort.

The spanish fort in the ship scene is the one we are standing in while waiting in line.

I had no idea that the reason the beginning of the ride is so foreboding compared to the rest is that you are reliving the dead pirate's memories. So profound & eerie, like all of that plundering and violence just to end up dead and long forgotten anyway. Could you imagine any modern Disney ride having such an artful theme and messaging?
