  A small factoid, sometime in the 80's or 90's the U505 was looking a bit worn out and need to be refurbished. The Museum reached out to the West German Government for help in finding parts to help with the restoration.  Germany not only gave them the parts for the boat but they also sent workers over to assist in the restoration of the boat.  The Germans are a proud people and since one of the subs from WWII was being restored they wanted it to be as perfect as they could get it.

  The camera guy was actually there for intelligence gathering in case they couldn't save the sub and had to abandon it.

  Having a photographer on the team was very important to capture everything to be sorted out later and for reference, especially if whatever you are looking at is no longer available in the future.

  They came real close to court martialing Cpt Gallery because of this. He wasn&apos;t ordered to do this, it was his own idea. <br><br>He wanted to retrieve intel from the sub, most importantly the crypto info. What he didn&apos;t know was that the Brits were already reading the German Enigma traffic, and didn&apos;t need the info. <br><br>But if the Germans learned that the sub had been captured they&apos;d have changed their Enigma settings, and the Brits would have lost the ability to read Enigma for a couple of weeks until Bletchley worked out the changes. <br><br>As this was two days before the Normandy landings, it would have been an inconvenient time to lose that ability.

  I grew up in the chicago land and all schools around here used to have field trips to this sub. &nbsp;good times!

  fun fact after the war some of the Pows from U505 worked as tour guides in Chicago

  I toured the submarine while on a 5th grade school trip to Chicago in 1963 (I think). That and the tour of the Shed Aquarium were the high point of the three-day trip for me. My thanks to Admiral Gallery. Actually, the salvage crew chose to believe that they could fix the sub before the ocean could claim them both. It was a very justified confidence in their abilities.
