  In History at school, Guyanese History students were told that our fore-parents were probably from Ghana and that the  Dutch did rule before the British.  The Dutch built the  sea-walls to keep out the Atlantic Ocean.  We were never told that the Amerindians were enslaved.  Instead we were taught that the Amerindians would catch runaway slaves and return them to the Colonizers. Neither were we taught that the Indians were enslaved, instead we were taught that the Indians came as Indentured Labourers who were paid for their labour and given free land to live and to plant.  However, the black slaves were not given free land, the slaves had to pool their money and purchase land for themselves from the former slave owners.  So , only the Africans were treated as Slaves.

  Eye opener for most.  I  always knew the Dutch influence in Guyana. To hear it now makes me want to believe the educational curriculum will change and that wildly used phrase, the only English speaking country    can be revisited. I prefer Creole,  closer to mother land

  I just found out today that even after emancipation from British slavery, the slave trade was still continuing twenty years after emancipation.  It's in a book the letter showing which company was still enslaving Africans and sending them to British Guiana, this company was already compensated for the end of the slave trade but they were still doing it.

  My Guyanese ancestry takes me Across most of Africa. I am from the Bantu region in west and North Africa, also the Congo, Sudan and Ethiopia.

  My husband and myself we’re both Guyanese, recently he did his DNA test and was pleasantly surprised to discover that he has ancestors from more than Africa countries, I will do my DNA test in the next month or two.
