  Elvis didn't learn about the ghetto from touring, he grew up in extreme poverty in Tupelo, Mississippi, so poor that black families in his neighborhood would leave food on the porch for him and his mother while his dad was in prison. They later moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Elvis lived in the projects all the way up until he made it big and bought his parents a house. He worked at various low-paying jobs as a teenager while going to school before he rose to fame. So, he sings from a place of authenticity.

  Elvis lived in the projects in Memphis during his high school years and in a shotgun style house in his early life in Tupelo Mississippi. He had a lot of empathy towards poor people because he was poor and struggled with poverty until he hit it big.

  Elvis attended and sang in a mostly Black church as a young man. Gave away homes and Cadillacs to poor people he just met. A wonderful Christian man, and what voice! One of the pioneers of Rock and Roll.

  He didn’t write this song but it was offered to Sammy Davis Jr. who said I know nothing about living like that but Elvis does , he grew up in the ghetto give it to him. Elvis grew up in a house that had a kitchen and a bedroom and no bathroom inside. Many people of later generations accuse Elvis of stealing black music and culture but Elvis grew up with the culture and loved the music , he sang in a church choir that was an all black church as an adult and his back up singers were black which I know sounds like no big deal but unfortunately it was then in the south when he had a show in Texas and they said your back up singers can’t perform here he said then I won’t perform here either. The radio stations smashed his records and called him the N word in the South  because of how he sang it was unbelievable how messed up the world was but Elvis would not change he did not care what they said because he saw people as people and new that racism was disgusting.

  Song was writtenby Mac Davis but Elvis added the haunting words "and his momma cried" . . . Mac allow the addition. The rest is history becoming one of his biggest hits.

  Elvis truly deserved the title "King". He grew up in poverty and he never forgot what it was like. Do some research. Throughout his life he paid people's medical bills, bought cars, gave money and did many other things directly helping people. He would read or hear about some one's struggle and would help.

  Elvis is the only artist that has been inducted in these hall of fames. Rock and Roll, Gospel, Rythm and Blues, Country and Rockabilly. He can sing all these. He also has a catalog of over 700 songs recorded.
