How China Built the Impossible Underwater Tunnel Beneath the World's Deadliest River

The Yellow River Tunnel: How China Drilled Under the World's Deadliest River Welcome to MegaBuild Files. The Yellow River has killed more people than any other river in recorded history — and in its lower reaches, the riverbed sits 10 meters above the surrounding city, held back by earthen levees that cannot be loaded, cannot be disturbed, and cannot tolerate more than 2 millimeters of settlement while a 5,200-ton machine bores directly beneath them. Driving the first single-bore double-deck tunnel under the Yellow River required pushing a 17.5-meter-wide cutting machine through six different types of hostile soil under 7.5 bars of water pressure, while maintaining face pressure to the tenth of a bar to prevent a blowout that could breach the flood embankment above. Midway through the drive, the cutterhead seized in a field of calcareous nodules harder than the machine was designed for, and the team had 48 hours to fabricate and install a custom grinding tool inside a pressurized chamber without ever opening it to the outside. This documentary goes inside the full engineering story of the Jinan Yellow River Tunnel: the world-record advance rate, the 2,500-year-old embankment that could not move, and the machine that went underneath the argument China had been losing for forty generations.
