I had a friend literally tell me that for the first part of the movie he hated Bear but because he saw the worst parts of him in the character, but when the rape scene happen (and yes i will call it that because that what happen) he said that is disgusting and he is gonna try to become better to get rid of any similarity with Bear because he would never want to become that person. This is what more men should understand, the problem is not falling for Bear "nice guy" persona or even find yourself relating with him, the problem is when you are presented with that mirror and you double down just like Alex did.

Alex Meyers' review of Obsession is the embodiment of the saying, "Sometimes the devil doesn't need an advocate" especially if you're going to do it poorly.

I think the "be careful what you wish for" is a fine thing to use in this context because it is LITERALLY the problem. It's not "be careful what you wish for because the thing you wished on could be cursed". It's literally, be careful what you wish for. It doesn't matter if you're wishing on cursed items. You shouldn't wish for this. Stop wishing for this.

For me, Obsession is about the banality of misogyny. It's about the guy who says all the right things about consent, yet acts in the exact opposite way and reeks of entitlement. It's about the friend group that claims to be worried about how strangely Nikki is acting, but instead of checking in on her, they simply try not to invite her to the party because she's annoying. It's about the female friend, Sarah, who expresses concern for Nikki in front of Bear but immediately follows it up with something along the lines of, "You deserve someone less crazy, someone more chill," positioning herself as the cool, desirable, stable "not like other girls" woman. (At the same time, the movie doesn't villainize her either, it's simply a nod to how internalized misogyny works, which makes her story even more tragic.) The film perfectly captures the isolating experience of being trapped in an abusive relationship, where you feel like you're going mad, but the more you struggle, the more your friends distance themselves from you because you're just a crazy woman now.
In the end, everybody failed Nikki.
It's amazing how many different aspects of misogyny this film explores and handles so well.
It's sad but kind of fitting that a movie about the banality of misogyny goes over the heads of many people who don't experience it or aren't interested in learning about it.

My “favorite” part is when he sarcastically says the people who hate Bear must also have a problem with the heroine of Disney Descendants using a love potion, as if that’s some inherently ridiculous idea rather than a genuine problem with that movie that people have complained about ever since it came out.

Before seeing Obsession I had assumed that it was just another vaguely misogynist "super crazy girlfriend" film, and I had no interest in seeing it. When the reviews started rolling in I got the sense that it was something more. The fact that this is a film about a woman being completely destroyed by a man's desire really resonated with me (and with plenty of other women in the audience). It's not funny, and it's not ok. I'm old enough to remember horror films where women were regularly assaulted, tortured and killed for nothing more than thrills or plot points, and I actually take it as a very good sign that this film and this topic are being taken more seriously. Also: Inde Navarette deserves all the attention she's getting: her performance is what makes this film more than just another horror flick (the scene where she suddenly "pops back" while she and Bear are in bed is truly horrifying).

I think people get hung up on the idea Bear didn't know the wish would work because it's normal to vent messed up feelings, and we can imagine that's what Bear thought he was doing in that moment... But, let's be honest; if a second after Bear made that wish a fairy godparent appeared and asked 'are you SURE?' I have no doubt he would have still made the wish. THAT'S the difference. Bear wouldn't think about Nikkis autonomy. If she'd never scared him it wouldn't have occurred to him either. He sees her as a character in his story who should be grateful if he can give her story what he sees as a happy ending

As a rhetoric scholar its so interesting that he said 'an attempt at' at 'good faith' when the over the top animation of the woman feels like the opposite of good faith. Also 'an attempt' is such an obvious attempt to shield any criticism with 'look i made an effort sorry im not perfect' which like ... ok well your effort needed more effort

I think trying to define a "villain" has essentially ruined the discourse on this movie. Alex's take was bad and it almost seems like he went in to "fight" the internet on the villainization of Bear, even if he claims "nuance". We know that was b.s. For most of the video, he seems to be actively fighting against seeing Bear as "a bad guy" because he didn't look or act like some sort of macho football jerk early in the film. I really think what went over Alex's head EARLY in the film was that the greatest threat to women haven't been the obviously big jerks, its the quiet guys you thought were safe, its your good friend you thought actually was just your good friend and suddenly they reveal feelings for you (not a villainous act on its own) and then gets angry when you don't feel them back (and this is where the problem is). There's nothing wrong with unrequited feelings, it happens, liking someone is selfish and superficial in the beginning in a lot of cases, being in that place is not a sin on its own, its just human. At that point in the film before the wish Alex could have been actually neutral, but instead he is actively verbalizing a "defense" to reviews he's obviously read well before seeing the film (and then continues this defense well pass the point of the wish). He also missed that if Bear actually loved or even genuinely cared about Nikki, the second she was acting out of character, he would have had concerns about Nikki not being Nikki, even when he had no idea if the wish worked. I don't even think the grand moral is "be careful what you wish for", I think the movie is a litmus test on what real caring is, even if you don't get what you "want" as a result.

But generally, films (and stories in general) don't require villians and heros, sometimes they are just making commentary on humans thrown together. A protagonist is just a central character we follow and an antagonist is just the foil for the journey. Heros and Villians do not have to be a part of it. We can examine Bear as a terrible person who had moments where he could have made a different decision and chose not to because he was so obsessed with adjusting for preferred outcome over actually caring about Nikki's autonomy. The scariest thing about a Bear is he's the person actually existing in the world with us and I would hope someone who has a crush and is maybe wrestling with unresolved feelings instead of becoming bitter about it would see all the wrongs of looking for a situation to take advantage of as a result of seeing Bear make all the wrong ones.

I have watched Alex's channel off and on for years and intentionally didn't watch his obsession review because I didn't really want to watch a "silly unserious" commentary on Obession, which is what I thought it would be. Old Disney channel movies, fine. But I immediately thought the Alex style didn't fit this movie, but I had no idea how bad it was until I saw the various clips online (as I caught up well after it had blown up).

10:17 For the record, that's wrong. The main character of Zapped realizes the error of her ways in a way that Bear never does. And the main character of 16 Wishes explicitly says she's not going to use the boyfriend wish because she wants the guy to actually love her and not just be under a spell. If Bear had that mindset, he'd have undone the wish when he was given the option.

As someone who hasn't watched the movie, I'm actually ""happy"" that there's a story that depicts stripping someone of emotional autonomy as a horrible thing. Ive read or watched too many stories that neutral to positive about it (I'm considering comedic execution as positive).
