Roberts Smiths persona was used by Tim Burton when he created Edward Scissorhands. He also wanted The Cure to do the soundtrack for the film.

Robert Smith ( vocals ) was before Edward Scissorhands actually. My daughter could probably tell me if he influenced Tim Burton.

This song is my utmost favourite of all time as one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s, instantly recognisable for its upbeat, energetic vibe. However, beneath its seemingly carefree and joyful exterior, there are deeper emotional layers that come to the forefront upon closer examination. The song tells the story of an idealised love that ultimately ends in a painful awakening: the realisation that the person once loved is no longer there, that the relationship has come to an end. While the fast tempo and dynamic guitar riffs create an euphoria-filled atmosphere, there’s a melancholic undertone running throughout, subtly conveyed through the synthesiser arrangement. The way the synthesiser is tuned introduces a hint of dissoance, and the electronic elements in the background gradually heighten the song’s darker tones, creating an emotional tension that becomes noticeable almost imperceptibly.

The synth doesn't just complement the melody; it helps convey the deeper meaning of the song. Although the primary theme is energetic and upbeat, the background noises and the tuning of the synthesiser evoke feelings of sadness and loss, all while enhancing the emotional contrast between the illusion of love and its inevitable end. The track exudes a bittersweet beauty, with the gradual realisation that this fleeting happiness won’t last, and that ultimately, a return to reality must come, when love is no longer present.

The music video, filmed in East Sussex at Seven Sisters cliffs, further amplifies the tragedy of the story. Beachy Head, a location long regarded as one of the most tragic suicide sites in England, adds an extra layer of symbolism to the song’s final, painful revelation: that the loss of the loved one is irreversible. The cliffs, as symbols of death and loss, reflect the agony of the awakening in the song, and represent the harsh confrontation with the end of the relationship.

Just Like Heaven is thus a poignant and melancholic composition that, despite its seemingly joyful sound, conveys hidden emotional tensions and the pain of loss. The synthesiser and electronic background sounds work effectively to emphasise this contrast, while the song reveals a deeper, tragic reality... the ultimate loss of love’s illusion.

I know this is a very thought-provoking analysis. In light of this, you must listen to the song again, because it gives off a completely different mood - much deeper than what it has always made you feel.

----------------------
(I wrote a dozen or so analyses in the late nineties of the songs that had shaped my musical tastes most profoundly. This piece is taken from that old Word document.)

Retired drummer here, played this for decades in bands people always loved it, great song.
Edit . .

I just heard this on the radio tonight, just flipped it on while driving. I think young people know less and less with the availability of the internet, than we did with zero internet.

If interested in further music by The Cure, first try "Pictures Of You" (both the shortened version for the video release and original longer studio version from the Disintegration album are both gems). From there, their first single "Boys Don't Cry" & the later songs "Inbetween Days" & "Friday I'm In Love" are all Pop perfection. While the more darker, brooding yet mesmerizing part of their catalogue is well represented by "Lullaby" & "Lovesong" (wow, the Disintegration album just keeps popping up). After that, if you want to get off the radar yet receive the reward, seek out the hidden treasure of their LIVE video rendition of their seminal song "A Forest", specifically found here on YT with the search The Cure, A Forest Live 1992. That rendition at 13 min 47 sec is a masterpiece!

"Just Like Heaven". This song, this music video, is an important benchmark for me. It's the late Eighties, I was a young lad still in school, going about my day around the house as normal. A very normal boy. I'm walking past the TV, this song, this video start to play, and it stopped me in my tracks. "What is this?" The melodies, the chords & keys melding into each other, the tones of Robert's voice, his plaintiff tale with their elongated forms against a gentle, kaleidoscopic background of multiple hues...I was entranced, intrigued. Seed planted, that moment began a lifelong journey to seeking music as art & not just entertainment. A changed life. I shed Mainstream, corporate music for a universe of Indie & Alternative. No longer normal & no regrets!
