Retired professional boxer here. EVERY martial art has a weakness. If you’re able to learn multiple disciplines then you will be able to fill in the gaps. But regardless, strikers need to know grappling and grapplers need to know striking. They go hand in hand. There is not one single martial art that is enough on its own. you NEED to be good at both grappling and striking.

Can't believe Karate wasn't mentioned here. Karate has 4 main weaknesses, though an experienced practitioner can find a way to overcome them all:

1. Karate DOES have a small bit of ground work, grappling, knees and elbows, but not enough to truly be a threat on the ground long. The elbows and knee strikes are designed to regain distance. Karate's true strength is its punches, kicks and defenses.

2. To truly master Karate, you must train in all 4 schools of it: Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu and Shito-Ryu. Until one does this, it is an incomplete art. HOWEVER, once one masters all 4, Karate is extremely devastating.

3. Related to number 2. Karate takes time to master. In boxing, krav maga, muay thai and BJJ, you learn applicable moves on day one. Karate emphasizes conditioning over time and learning a few basic strikes and mastering them. The true training does not begin until 1st Dan Black Belt. This is one of the reasons Karate is seen as a "weak" martial art when amateurs think they can take the basics and go win fights immediately. Until black belt, most of the emphasis is on blocks and defense. HOWEVER, this weakness becomes Karate's greatest strength if one stick through the training all the way. By the time you reach black belt, your body is well-conditioned to where you can eat a few strikes and it not bother you too much.

4. Kind of relates to the 1st point. Karate is a "jack of all trades" martial art. You learn a few things in all ranges, but learn no range extensively. You learn a few punches, but those punches will not be as effective as a boxer's punches. You learn kicks, but those kicks will not be as fast as Taekwondo or as powerful as Muay Thai. You learn elbows and knee strikes, but they will not be as well honed as Muay Thai. You learn grappling and clinching, but not as well as Wrestling, BJJ or Judo. Karate's main strength is using the defenses you learn long enough to learn your opponent's weaknesses and time the right type of attack at the right time.

For example, instead of trying to punch a boxer, you learn to sweep their knees. Instead of trying to match kicks with someone in Taekwondo or Muay Thai, you learn to block their initial attacks, get in close and take their asses to the ground. Instead of grappling with someone in BJJ, you strike them as hard as possible.

Karate relies on you using your brain under pressure to deliver the right attack at the right time and to be wise enough to know when you need to be defensive and offensive. While no one martial art is perfect, Karate at least gives you a wider range of coverage, even if you do not master any of the ranges.
