What classic novel do you think still needs a great film adaptation?

One recent tidbit I read- “H. P. Lovecraft reportedly had a high, almost falsetto voice, which was very nasal and marked with a pronounced Rhode Island accent. Which means he sounded like Peter Griffen.”

I’ve spent years wishing this version of the movie would get made only to have most of that enthusiasm evaporate after hearing the plot

I remember reading At the Mountains of Madness in the hospital. My dad was very ill, so I spent many days there, but at night the place was so unsettling that reading Lovecraft there felt perfectly insane. The exploration of the city was one of the story’s most terrifying parts; I could practically hear the howling wind, feel the biting cold, and sense those unseen creatures lurking. That’s why it’s such a shame Del Toro’s script barely touched it this amazing part.

Thought upon seeing the title: Guillermo Del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness? We might have missed out on something interesting.<br>Thoughts after hearing the script summary: Never mind.

I like del Toro overall, but I'm honestly glad this never got made. GDT's work is so nakedly, inescapably sentimental and romantic and his best work is when he leans into that (Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak). I genuinely don't think he's capable of the bleakness and lack of romanticism an Lovecraft adaptation would require.

I thought del Toro... READ this story?<br><br>We never know what the Elder Things would have done eventually, because they are killed soon after awakening. The narrator laments it. He sees how they thawed and awoke, were immediately attacked by bizarre crazed creatures (the sled dogs), fought back and killed the panicked, violent dogs and humans, examined the remains, moved on in a strange altered world, and were themselves slain. It's so incredibly sad and he can empathize with them and mourn their comrades at the same time. That's actually an important part of the story: the chance for a connection across a billion years lost to panic and confusion.

Your assessment of the script is spot on. The novella is really about exploring the gigantic empty city, and to miss that is like making a pirate movie without ships...

Shoggoths and their creators started in ocean water, it was the shoggoths ability to move on land during the rebellion that first frightened the Old Ones.

Honestly, I'm begining to think we dodged a bullet :T<br><br>Anyhoo, I'd recomend checking out the HP lovecraft Historical society audio drama of this story. It's an amazing adaptation done in the classic radio drama style of the 1930's

I gotta say, having not finished this video yet:<br><br>This story makes GDT’s next project (Pacific Rim) afterwards feel even more special.<br><br>What better way to wash the sadness of a failed Cosmic Horror movie away than to make one of the greatest reverse-cosmic-horror movies ever.<br><br>“Ancient aliens are sending Cthulhu-sized monstrosities at us at an exponential rate. Now HOP INTO A GIANT ROBOT AND ROCKET PUNCH EM IN THE FACE”
