Your Dowel Maker sucks... Unless its one of these!

If you make one that is 11/32" you can market it to arrow makers. I paid a fortune for the big expensive lee valley dowel maker and proper size bushing. The cut quality leaves a lot to be desired.

I think Matthias was the first big time YouTube video about woodworking guy. Spawned an entire industry filled with people working out of massive shops filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in woodworking equipment and fretting about keeping up with video ideas while they all just copy eachother and make river tables or whatever else is the flavour of the week, using essentially the same techniques and stopping for the same sponsor ads mid-build.
And here is Matthias, all these years later, in the same basement workshop, using only the tools he made, to produce a dowel maker out of firewood and a used box knife blade 😂
I honestly love it, I'd say "don't ever change", but I know you won't. And that brings me some peace in an otherwise topsy turvy world.

I loved how the comment on the “Made-in-China approach” versus the “Made-in-Japan approach” came right before showing the Made-in-Canada approach.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a 3/4” and 1” one for timberframing pegs.
The forces get bigger and it’ll be a challenge but if anyone is up for it.

I don't need a dowel maker, but if I did I know I'd be a lot more willing to pay for the version that used standard razor blades. That'd probably be the major selling point for me.

Cool product! You have way more patience than I do, I'd have found something else to do after about the 10th iteration.

Zinc-aluminum die cast! Flows well, low casting temps (comparatively), molds last very long, alloys like ZA8 resist wear very well, low per part price... just that you'd have to make 1k+ to justify the ~$10k mold costs... for each size. Maybe ask your China contacts?

Don’t forget us down under in Australia. Want to buy one to match Rob Cosman dowel center for near invisible wood hinges. 3/8.

I've needed dowels from specific woods several times. I've found the easiest/best for me was to use a table saw or router as the cutter. I just made a small jig with an inlet hole the size of your square stock and a catch hole at finish diameter. Raise your blade/bit to height and feed it through. You can feed by hand or with a drill. Use longer stock than you need and you never get in close to the cutter. When using the tablesaw: angle your jig about 10-15 degrees to the blade. Makes a cleaner finish.

The ones I've made only ever took maybe five minutes to make.

The tapered hole with a flush trim bit really caught me off guard. That goes staight to my mental toolbox👍

Are smooth dowels really better when you use them for joining stuff?

I mean, the glue should grip the rough ones better and the fibers might expand for an effect that is somewhat like pre compressed dowels (probably not as much expansion)
