Prefer this video over a tierlist

I miss the core 3d printer topic, not just printer reviews. (In general, not just your channel.) Can't wait for the next video

I think tier lists are stupid. This sort of content, I like.

YES! this is the technical content I want! oh this scratched an itch, thanks Tom!

For closed loop motor control, there is a board called the Ourobouros that was designed specifically for this. A few years ago, the HevORT printer team experimented with closed-loop servos for motion systems as well. Kalico (aka "danger Klipper") also has a "model predictive control" feature that takes the "old" PID control/pressure advance strategy and replaces it with a system model approach.

This was a great video summing up the state of things, so to speak, but there is quite a lot more going on out there (longer melt zones in modern hotends like the Chube and the "melt zone extender" trend being one such thing). Would love to see a follow up where you dig into some of the things that are already out there that you seemed to be wishing for in this video.

I admit I’m above average interested in this, so a bit biased 😂, but in my eyes it was Klipper that changed the direction of hobby motion control firmware. It introduced a clean architecture where the Linux host became the motion planner and the microcontroller became a deterministic real-time executor. Instead of forcing a small MCU to parse G-code, compute kinematics and plan acceleration, Klipper moved those heavy calculations to the host. The Pi handled predictive planning, deep lookahead across motion queues and floating point trajectory calculations that would normally overwhelm a small embedded processor.

From my own experience building motion systems I had seen how quickly MCUs ran into limits when planning and execution shared the same resources. Heap pressure, stack issues and timing jitter started appearing once trajectory planning and communication were combined. Klipper solved this by letting the MCU simply execute timestamped step schedules with tight timing guarantees.

The result is a very elegant architecture that reduces jitter and CPU pressure on the MCU while enabling much more advanced motion planning. The concept is surprisingly close to ideas used in industrial motion systems from Siemens and Fanuc, which historically relied on FPGA controllers and fieldbus systems like EtherCAT. The technologies differ, but they all address the same fundamental problem of deterministic high speed motor control combined with predictive motion planning. So my vote go to Klipper.

as a helper on the Voron discord, it's great to see you pull the old girl out and talk about it again.

Would love to see prints evolving with each new feature being added, and the time to print them. A kind of visual walk through the progress.

The whole reason I even have hobbies like this is because I am trying to make the most difficult part. That's basically outsourcing all of the fun.

I don't understand the tier list argument? This is not rating each technique as replacements but quite the opposite, seeing how they all work together to fix each other's limitations. If you really wanna go for a popular format on this topic I would think the iceberg thing would be a nice fit, with the more known techniques at the top and the more niche/emerging/old-experiments stuff at the bottom

16:53 ... more please. I was the dude that put accelerometers on the e3d toolchanger and read out the dynamic response of the toolhead through an hp35670a... I see that the entire forum for that is gone now... where did it go?
Glad you're still at it Tom!!!

I really like video essay formats more than tierlists. Tierlists makes everything a comparison to each other, when each thing's contribution to printer tech is just as valuable imo. This format made it more as a story of the printers' journey instead of a tech wishlist
