  An American asked me how we South Africans celebrate July 4th. I had to explain that only the USA celebrates its July 4th Independence Day and that the rest of the world's countries have their own, different, national holidays. He was shocked.

  I was travelling through Italy some years ago with a good guide but he was about over the really stupid expectations of American tourists. One day, in exasperation, he said "look, you have left the USA to see something different. Just because it isn't like America doesn't mean in is primitive or boring. If you don't want to see something different just stay at home".

  American here.  I know these are 'low lights', but can only apologize for the crude, rude, and ignorant behavior in these stories.  Having traveled to the U.K. and Ireland, I have tried to travel with the presence of mind that I am a guest in their countries.  I think the highlight of any the trips is learning about the differences and similarities of our cultures.  One memorable time was touring a medieval cathedral  and having it pointed out the one section was the 'new' section.  It was added on in 1066 C.E.  Realizing it would be another 4 centuries before America would be 'discovered' by Europeans.

  You don&apos;t &apos;work as a guard&apos; at Buckingham Palace. &nbsp;It is part of your military duty when your unit of the Household Division has taken over the guard duties from their usual soldiering.

  The tourist that thought there&apos;d be an escalator on a mountain should have visited North Wales instead and taken the train to the top of Mount Snowdon. <br>He&apos;d certainly have experienced the level of capitalism that he&apos;s used to at home, paying £35 for a 5 mile train ride.
