Not everyone just "knew" what they had done. Many fought because they believed the Empire was the rightful government. In a galaxy of trillions, most soldiers and officers would be unaware of the Empire's greatest atrocities.<br><br>The most obvious one, Alderaan, could always have other explanations invented for it.

In my eyes, the Emperor was behind all mayor discisions regarding who lived and who died. Absolutely nothing was done without his say. Without the Emperor, Vader, and Moff Tarkin at the helm, it would eventually all fall apart very quickly. You can tell by strikes back that the death of Moff Tarkin was a catastrophic blow for the empire and Vader's behaviour was getting more and more erratic. By ROTJ Vader was just an emotional broken down mess. In my opinion, the Empire started with Palpatine, and it ended with him.
