  The stunning thing about Stand By Me and the performances is the fact that it can make you nostalgic for a time that you never were a part of with friends you never had.

  Vern's penny is also a perfect symbol for a coming-of-age story. In the beginning we learn Vern buried a jar of pennies and has been unable to find them. The pennies represent his childhood. But he finds a penny at the end -- you cannot return to your childhood, but you can take some childlike qualities with you as you grow older.

  I’m 70. We hung out at a railroad trestle when we were kids. I watched the movie with my 11 year old grandson. Then I took him (back at my old neighborhood) to the trestle. I’m not sure exactly why, but to this day, that moment remains magical with both of us.

  Vern's penny is immortalized in a street crossing in Brownsville, Oregon (where much of this film was filmed). I think of Vern and his buddies every day on my morning walk when I pass it. And then I mourn for the loss of River Phoenix and what art he would have given the world. Every single morning. What a beautiful and haunting film!

  Damn, watched this video 2 days ago and found Rob Reiner's relationships with the kid actors so sweet, only to hear about the news of his and his wife's horrific deaths today. RIP Rob and Michele Reiner.

  I really wish we got to see River Phoenix in more films. He was an incredible actor and the body of work he did was incredible. Thank you for this video man, this film is fantastic and it’s great to see you talk about this. Keep up the great work and take care!

  Stand By Me is a perfect snapshot of a time when life was slower, friendships ran deeper, and the world was so simple, compared to the technology-fuelled mess we're in today. I miss being that age and the friends I had then.
