  I definitely hate when tv shows make it seem like it is terrible for any guy to be friendly to women, if they are friendly to them they are gay

  We need more representation of men who aren’t given a hard time by their peers for liking things associated with femininity ! I think Charles Boyle in Brooklyn 99 is a good example of this, he likes some stuff / expresses himself in a way that could make people speculate about his sexuality and sometimes makes accidental gay innuendos but the other characters never call him gay for it and he gets girlfriends easily, it’s refreshing :)

  It&apos;s funny The Nanny is one of the oldest shows he uses as an example but handles it better then more recent ones

  This trope bothers me bc it’s just reinforcement of gender roles, the women in these shows are looking for a man they classify as gay based on stereotypes and either get mad when he’s just a straight guy with “feminine” interests or get mad when he’s “too gay” for them, people either want the gay or the man but don’t wanna reconcile with the gay man

  You know how girls have shows like Totally Spies, My Little Ponies, and Winx, where it&apos;s a group of female characters with different personalities and interests, &nbsp;but they are all considered whole and valid? I think boys need that. Men used to be able to like literature and wear color and have social tact, and it wasn&apos;t considered gay.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5ALFBKxodo&amp;t=454">7:34</a> I met a male hairstylist (in the 90’s) and assumed he was gay and was chatting away until some woman came out all angry and possessive. He later told me (when I was pregnant) that he had thought I was a lesbian so there’s that.

  This reminds me of that one ICarly episode, &quot;iDate a Bad Boy&quot;. Carly starts dating a guy named Griffin, who is pretty much the Bad Boy stereotype: snarky, aggressive, no respect for authority and a criminal history (they meet after he steals Spencer&apos;s motorcycle). Carly enjoys dating him because she finds it thrilling to be with such a daaangerous man. Up until the moment she finds out that Griffin collects stuffed animals. This is treated like something extremely embarassing because it&apos;s not stereotypically masculine. Carly has a whole crisis about it, Sam agrees with her and Freddie literally rejoices because now that Griffin is revealed to be not wholly toxic masculine it means he has a shot again, because surely Carly will break up with him now. Note that Griffin is a very sweet boyfriend to Carly the whole time and never once criticizes her for her own free-time activities. But she just cannot get over the fact that her bad boy is passionate about plushies instead of something more &quot;manly&quot;. She goes so far as to try and change him by gifting him a power drill, in the hopes he&apos;ll use it for a more masculine hobby. And when he doesn&apos;t get it and instead says he&apos;ll use it to build more shelves for his plushies she gets so angry she nearly destroys one of her boyfriend&apos;s cherished possessions with the very same drill, because he has the audacity to enjoy something outside the accepted masculine activities. The episode fully expects you to side with Carly, by the way.

  Just to add my own experience to the the whole debacle of society associating toxicity with masculinity, I was a kid in the 90&apos;s and dealt with a lot of homophobic bullying. Once after getting taunted with a bunch of cruel slurs, I asked someone who witnessed the bullying what I was doing that was causing all this harassment. What was I doing that was making me such a target? Why did everyone just assume that I was gay? Their response was that I was &quot;too nice.&quot; That moment stuck with me after all these years because it showed that this wasn&apos;t an issue with me, it was a fundamental rot within society that had such a rigid standard of masculinity so fragile that kindness could invalidate it.
