New here? We make documentaries about the stories the news ignores, made by women filmmakers. This film has since been screened in Parliament and raised twice in the House of Commons. Our next film is out in November. Subscribe so you don’t miss it 🤍

A note on Scotland: Scotland acted first. In 2014, after a campaign by Scottish Mesh Survivors, health boards in Scotland were asked to suspend mesh. I hate that I have to find out about this through an incidental YouTube recommendation, and not every news media outlet ever

oh my god i'm so angry!! i'm a medical student, I did my urology exam two weeks ago and the only procedure that was explained to us for prolapses was this mesh! the professor didn't say anything about all this! i'm so shocked. what if this video was never recommended to me? i don't want to be a urologist in the future, but knowing these people are teaching something like this as the golden standard is making my skin crawl... i feel so bad for all these women!

I had hemoroid surgery years ago, my female surgeon told me straight up that the mesh is as useless and temporary option that can cause painful complications, that she never uses it if she can help it, and the surgical removal was the best option. So glad she understood that and did a wonderful job, almost 10 years and a whole baby later and my butthole still feels pristine since the surgery.

I'm not a doctor but I'm a biologist and I do not understand how a professional working in medicine can look at a piece of sharp and flimsy plastic and not think "this will do extreme damage to tissue if left inside a body". There is just no other thought coming to my mind looking at this stuff

I know a woman who had suffered from exactly this. She was in intense pain EVERY DAY. The doctors gaslit her for YEARS before finally she sought out others who had the same thing happen to them and found doctors willing to admit it EXISTED. But by then it was too late. The mesh had fragmented throughout her torso, she'd have to undergo massive surgery to TRY and find all the bits everywhere. She died after decades of agony; pain killers did little to help.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m 59, I live in California, my Gyn just performed a hysteroscopy on me yesterday and says I may need a hysterectomy pending results of biopsies taken. She then said, while I’m in there I can install a mesh sling for your bladder, simple and quick”. I had told her I have a mild stress incontinence, quite mild, and she offered the sling immediately. Something in the back of my mind warned me against it, vague memories of news reports from years ago and now this video popped up in my feed. I’m very thankful for this and will pass it along. No mesh for me.

To bring this device back after all the harm it has created is just plain sadistic

One thing they didn’t mention in this doc was that some brands of the mesh would break apart and migrate all over the body. And would cut up organs and tissues. Horrible injustice

We have a family friend who had this mesh surgery over 15 years ago. She was a highly successful florist for celebrity weddings and events. From the moment she had the surgery, she was unable to stand long enough to do her work, she became addicted to pain medicine, used a cane or walker (she was young and strong before), and was hospitalized several times for pain medicine addiction after no history at all of addiction or mental health issues. She has had excruciating chronic pain. Mesh destroyed her life.

Recently a French actor went through with euthanasia after a medical mesh was used in his groin after a hernia surgery, causing him a plethora of irreversible damage. The doctor(s) responsible didn't even face any consequences as far as I know, even after not disclosing to him any potential side effects. He ended up with myalgic encephalomyelitis, destroyed immune system and a persistent inflammation that destroyed his life without any option to treat. It's sickening that it's still being promoted so widely.

I had rectal and uterine prolapses. When the mesh went bad I returned to the doctor that had put it in. He said “can’t take that mesh out” then left me alone in the room. He went straight into the next room with his next victim. New York University Medical Center in NYC. I didn’t go to my local hospital thinking that Manhattan had real experts. Sued and got $135,000 that went to pay my bills. I went into debt because I could not work. After doctor at Cornell Presbyterian removed it. Feeling normal and functioning now. Don’t give up. It can be removed but it might take you awhile to find someone competent.
