That's arithmetic, not laziness — a summer bass that hunts too hard spends more than it catches. In September the shad pull together and start moving, and a bass that waits goes hungry. So it stops waiting, leaves the cover, and starts running down bait in open water like a different animal. And a chasing fish does not eat a bait crawling on the bottom. 📍 FOLLOW THE SHAD AND YOU FIND THE FISH. That's the entire September pattern in four words. As the water cools the shad pull into tighter schools and push into the backs of creeks, chasing whatever warm water is left. The bass go WITH them — same water, same time. Which means the deep structure that held fish all summer is quietly emptying, and the creek you drove past for three months is filling up. ⏱️ AND YOU'RE FISHING TWO DIFFERENT FISH. Smallmouth enter their autumn pattern several degrees BEFORE largemouth do. Same lake, same week, and one species has switched over while the other hasn't. Midday sun in July drives bass down and puts them under cover. But in September the water has cooled enough that the midday penalty disappears, and the shad are up and active in the warmest part of the day. So the bass come up with them — and almost nobody is throwing anything at the surface at one in the afternoon. Don't pack the topwater away at nine in the morning. Six inches or more on heavy tackle, because the biggest fish in the lake are following shad and eating the largest thing that separates from the group.
