  "Do it or be destroyed" single-handedly destroys consent. True consent only exists if "no" is an acceptable answer. This section of D&C makes "no" impossible, which makes all those polygamous relationships abusive (as the difference between sex and abuse is consent).

  Taking Emma’s perspective, the threats of destruction had to have had a double meaning for her. If Emma suspects Joseph is pretending to receive revelation, then the implication is clear - Joseph is threatening Emma with violence.

  The doctrine of eternal family sealings in Mormonism is a an example of a classic marketing problem: &nbsp;How do you sell a product or service that nobody particularly wants or needs? &nbsp;The classic strategy in marketing (as well as in persuasive communications) is to first identify or create a problem in the minds of the intended consumers for which the otherwise unwanted product or service is then presented as the solution.<br><br>The product being sold by Mormonism in this case was &quot;eternal family sealings&quot; (a doctrinal innovation that was really all about profiting the &quot;prophet&quot; and his friends by providing a justification and rationalization for them to engage in relationships with as many partners as they wanted and whom they could persuade to go along with their propositions). <br><br>What often goes unnoticed and discussed is the doctrinal innovation that created the &quot;problem&quot; that made it possible to persuasively sell the &quot;eternal marriage and family sealing&quot; product. &nbsp; That doctrine was the doctrine of eternal separation. &nbsp;<br><br>Contrary to what most Christians at that time (and pretty much all other times) believed, Joseph Smith created a problem in the minds of his followers that applied even to good people who believed in Jesus and had been baptized. &nbsp; Now, according to Prophet Joe, if all you wanted to do in heaven is hang out with strangers and not be a part of any family, you could just go on living like most ordinary Mormons (and to some extent ordinary Christians) who only had the basic salvation package (baptism and belief in Jesus). &nbsp;<br><br>But if you wanted to be reunited with loved ones in heaven and not be eternally separated from them in heaven, there was only one solution. &nbsp;You guessed it. &nbsp;The solution to the problem of eternal separation was Prophet Joe&apos;s &quot;eternal family sealing ordinance&quot; (patented, copyrighted and trademarked), which could ONLY be supplied by Prophet Joe and his authorized distributors. &nbsp; And if you, the religious product consumer, really wanted to be part of something elite, big and powerful, like a very elite, big and powerful &quot;eternal family&quot; in heaven, you could go for the premium &quot;eternal family sealing&quot; package which made it possible for many women to be sealed to the men who had the biggest priesthood (and hence the biggest, most elite and most powerful eternal families). &nbsp; Basically, Prophet Joe, Briggy and their ilk applied the parable of the talents as justification for their harem building programs: &nbsp;“For unto every one that hath [a really big priesthood and high status with God] shall be given [many women as eternal brides], and he shall have abundance [in his harem]: but from him that hath [only a small priesthood and relatively low status with God] shall be taken away even [the woman] which he hath [and that woman shall be given to the man with the big priesthood].”<br><br>Joseph Smith was a classic scam and flim-flam man, mining human gullibility with great industriousness and often profiting handsomely in one way or another from his efforts.

  Great episode! &nbsp;My mind was literally blown with the idea, &quot;God could have solved the Emma problem very easily. He could have just gone to Emma and told Emma what he wanted Emma to do.&quot; &nbsp;I don&apos;t know why I didn&apos;t think about this before. &nbsp;You are right John. &nbsp;God could have easily solved this issue and let Emma know if polygamy was His commandment and His will, but he didn&apos;t. If this was such an important commandment, I think God would have let Emma know in some way as well.

  David Whitmer destroys this revelation in one line. &quot;In the revelation on polygamy, it says that Emma Smith—Brother Joseph&apos;s wife—must receive the revelation to allow Brother Joseph to have more wives, or she shall be destroyed.   My faith struggle began with recognizing the church&apos;s value statements and truth claims around eternal families had no legs to stand on.

  Wow. This conversation had a big impact on me. I left the church 13 years ago and almost all of my family is still part of the church. When I first left I did a lot of research about the history, and I remember thinking &quot;that&apos;s all I need to know, it&apos;s awful, I need to move forward.&quot; As I&apos;ve gotten older I realize it&apos;s important for my healing to understand my ancestry, my family, and the church I was raised in. Learning from conversations like this really helps me to understand the toxic and unhealthy patterns, the generational trauma, and where the psychological aspects originated.   In my opinion this is the most important episode of lds discussions. This is the most important thing any believing Mormon should know. D&amp;C 132 puts all of Joe’s manipulative tactics, errors, evil desires, and hubris on display for the world to see. All in the name of God. I’m really disturbed by this still canonized doctrine as a woman who spent 22 years in the church. I wish I had known sooner. I now grieve for my family who are still trapped in all of this evil disguised as godly love.
