The Greatest Flood in Earth’s History

If you look down from an airplane window as you fly across eastern Washington, you will see a landscape that looks as if it was clawed apart by a giant: thousands of square miles of shredded volcanic basalt, dry gorges, and an immense four-hundred-foot cliff called Dry Falls that stretches three and a half miles wide—four times the width of Niagara Falls—yet not a single drop of water flows over its edge. For nearly a century, mainstream geology insisted this desert was carved by millions of years of peaceful, gentle rain. But in the 1920s, a solitary field geologist named J Harlen Bretz discovered giant ripples hundreds of feet high, titanic erratic boulders perched on high basalt plateaus, and evidence of a cataclysm that the scientific establishment dismissed as impossible mythology. Fifteen thousand years ago, during the twilight of the Ice Age, an immense glacial lobe crept southward across northern Idaho, damming the Clark Fork River behind a 2,000-foot wall of ice. Behind it, Glacial Lake Missoula formed—a freshwater inland sea containing over 500 cubic miles of water. When the lake reached 1,800 feet deep, basic Archimedes physics took over: the ice dam floated, shattered, and unleashed a 400-foot wall of water traveling at 65 miles per hour with a discharge ten times greater than all the rivers on Earth combined. In this documentary, Earth Unpacked breaks down the physics of the greatest flood in planetary history, the underwater cavitation that tore solid bedrock like dynamite, and the fifty-year academic battle that transformed modern geology.
