I don’t know why it never occurred to me that the antagonist and sacrifice for the very end in a film about a PAGAN cult is named CHRISTIAN

It’s actually interesting to me that you mentioned that the director’s cut makes it seem like she’d be less likely to be assimilated in to the cult because it shows that she has more intelligence than those around her when you think about how cults work/prey on people.

Cults don’t actually typically prey on people who are unintelligent, they prey on people who are not emotionally fulfilled. People who are sad, lonely, or who have lower self esteem. Intelligence is actually very rarely a saving grace sort of factor when it comes to resisting a cult, in the exact same way that very intelligent people can fall prey to abusive relationships.

Because cults aren’t usually about “tricking stupid people”

Cults are all about isolating people who are already vulnerable, whether that is physically, emotionally, monetarily, or any mix thereof, and becoming the only safety net the vulnerable person believes they have available. They gain followers by being emotionally manipulative, in a way that being intelligent doesn’t necessarily safeguard you against.

Which is exactly how abusive relationships work, which she’s clearly already a victim of

The scene when her boyfriend complains that she gave him flowers is all about his projection! Who sees her picking wildflowers as a chastisement unless he really feels bad for not getting her anything?!

Cults actually always take advantage of people's emotional vulnerabilities. They never manipulate your inteligence or logic. They appeal to your emotional wounds or/and vulnerabilities

tbh Christian not knowing how to use JSTOR in grad school really really highlights how inept he is at academia. it is probably the biggest online database for academic journals, it is something you normally learn about in first year of undergrad and even if you don't use it that much, which can happen, there is no chance he would need help using it if he was even a semi decent grad student.

The directors cut really makes some of the others seem more deserving of what happens to them

woww that scene about the flowers is so frustrating. he is so sure that everything she does is a slight and she's resentful because of his own subconscious guilt, knowing he's not doing enough.

Christian accusing Dani for "using" her psychology degree on him is crazy work... "How dare you use your knowledge of the human relationship to call out my terrible job as a boyfriend!"
