The concept of a horror movie commentator having a baby bunny running around causing mischief while talking about people being skinned

The empathic wailing was a tough moment for me because I legitimately went, “Well maybe the cult is onto something.”

"My bunny rabbit just ran into the piano" was the most jarringly adorable sentence to come in the middle of this review and honestly a lovely break from that intense grief scene. Tell your bunny rabbit I said nose wriggle

It's so good to hear someone point about that the end of the film isn't a "YASSS YOU GO QUEEN" ending. Dani has just found a new set of abusers to entrench herself with. She had NO agency amongst these folks.

I just want to say how hard they nailed the casting and writing of Pelle. He’s extremely handsome while still remaining approachable. He’s sexy without exuding the kind of male sexuality many women find threatening. He has the kindest, bluest puppy eyes you’ve ever seen and a baby face. His hair is long and effeminate. He is warm and emotionally vulnerable. He is the PERFECT bait for a sad woman in a semi-abusive relationship with a douchebag. His appearance and actions are so in line with what a desperate person would want to see after begging god to send them an angel. He immediately feels like a “safe” man. He is very attractive and yet not SO attractive that a woman with poor self-esteem would assume she wouldn’t have a chance with him.

Everyone involved in the creation of this character understood the “female gaze.” It would have been easy to go with some Nordic supermodel looking guy, but it simply wouldn’t have been as effective or convincing. Everything about Pelle is catnip for a distressed sad woman with low self-esteem that’s dating a douche because she’s too afraid to be alone. 11/10 I love this character.

Maybe this is just me as someone going through the wringer of postpartum, but a chilling detail I hadn’t noticed before is “everyone raises the babies”, which sounds nice at first, but it means that members don’t even have family autonomy. Your children are not your own, your parents aren’t your own, they’re busy with other people’s children. It’s another classic cult control tactic.

I was raised in a cult, and I absolutely did not see the ending as a happy one. It was like separating two fighting children by killing one and locking the other in a basement for the rest of her life. Like yay they stopped fighting, but this is WORSE.

Something I don’t really see people talk about is that Dani clearly had friends of her own before her family tragedy, and the really truly tragic nail in the coffin is that if Christian had just called it off a year earlier and hadn’t dragged their relationship out, Dani would’ve had a better support system. She likely wouldn’t have isolated herself from her friends, or her friends wouldn’t have given up on trying to help her if Christian wasn’t still in the picture.

I don’t know if this is obvious but I always thought of the flowers weighing her down in the ending kind of portraying the new prison she is in

49:50 When Dani says she could see Christian leaving her behind, Pelle turns his head slightly. He's listening in the entire time. Watching and hoping for the signs that his manipulation of Dani is working. He even looks like he's about to say something, but changes his mind at the last moment. Ari Aster thinks of every detail!

What makes the ending so impactful is that Dani genuinely feels like she's been liberated because she's been so effectively indoctrinated. We experience most of the events through her, so if nobody saw it as some sort of you-go-girl girlboss moment, the film would have failed at conveying that cult indoctrination.
