5:00 correct. Many people don’t accept this definition, yet it is the right one. Anything out that didn’t go in is distortion.

In my opinion, a good preamplifier is a device that delivers an output signal with a higher amplitude than the input signal, while respecting impedance requirements on both ends and altering the input signal's characteristics as little as possible (except for amplitude, of course). That said, I consider the Neve 1073 a poor preamplifier—though I am certain that when it was originally built, the goal was to make it as clean as possible—because it introduces equalization, dynamics, and saturation to the original signal; aspects that, in my view, fall outside the scope of a preamplifier's function. There are dedicated units designed to add equalization, dynamics, or saturation that perform these tasks in a far more controlled and competent manner.

I still have a couple CDs from a company called 3D audio inc. They put out comparison CDs back in the day before internet was good. You can drastically hear the difference in a few of them. The Daking and Neve preamps jump out obviously above most of the others.

The question is always wether you can hear the difference or not. Otherwise it doesn't effect the endproduct

There are so many nuances when placing/selecting mics, adjusting levels, pre-processing, etc that all synergistically affect the production, all which take expertise and musical talents, all gained by experience.

Null tests can be a bit misleading outside of the purely digital domain -- you can have minor phase variations that will cause signals to not null that you can't hear when flipping back and forth between the sources.

Hot take: Some people might be unable to perceive subtle sonic differences because of the time they’ve spent using headphones/earbuds at high volumes.
