Thank you for listening to Bookstore Brew!

Do you think there should be an AP poll ranking this early in the season? Should we discuss it?

Dylan Raiola or Dante Moore?

  • @HoosierFilms · 3 hours ago

In previous years it was very or more easy to identify great teams. Sure there were some whiffs and outliers but mostly it was the same 5-7 teams ranked roughly in the right area. Now that talent is spread across so many teams, this process is harder than ever. I think many AP voters just haven’t adjusted.

I don't think the preseason and the early rankings do no matter! I agree with you CFP rankings matter!

You will always have preseason polling as long as their are no rules for a uniform schedule for all programs. All records are not the same. You can't play 6 tomatoes cans while another program plays tougher competition and expect to be ranked higher. Better scheduling would solve a ton of problems. Playing cupcakes makes everything subjective. And polls also brings engagement, and that's money. And an intity like college football don't care about your feelings about preseason polls because it brings money.

We can say the AP doesn't matter but the playoff poll has been pretty much the same as the AP.

Buttger has no expectation of winning. Their fans are going to see if Buttger pulls off the upset. It is actually a more optimistic feeling than IU fans watching to see if we win 'the right way' or play to 'the standard'. As an Alabama alum put it, being a front runner is all about heartbreak. All games are now just about what is going wrong or could potentially go wrong.

This is the problem I see: you are pointing out some symptoms that no one is disputing, but you don't describe the cause nor prescribe the cure. Remember in the first 3 weeks, you were very critical of Bebe Jr's performance and you practically wrote him off? He didn't really change. What changed was the way the O-line, plus some additional blocking from WR, plus even the QB, helped to open up the path for him. Apparently it took some process to get there, but you only care about the result. Thus, the standard to you is just the result only, nothing else. If USC beat Oregon this last weekend, they met your standard, regardless of what their player did. Longhorns met your standard regardless of what their players did in the end zone. Did the IU football team meet their own standard on the field? Probably not. Should you chew them out about it, that's your right. But let's wonder what this standard is for. I believe the overall goal is to build an everlasting franchise called IU Hooisers football program that elevates the entire school and student/alumni body to a new level. If that's the goal, there are a lot of things that need to be done. The stadium is not up to standard, the city of Bloomington is not up to standard, and yes, even some of these fan podcasts are not up to the standard. The prescription: do your work, stop whining (or maybe just whine a bit), get better. Also, I think you thrive on controversy -- as our dear benevolent national leader taught us, that's another standard I don't necessarily agree to.

This is how it works: ESPN has an aggressive agenda, using propaganda (all media companies do) they push their agenda to convince the world to rank SEC teams. AP voters are susceptable, just like you and I, to this propaganda. This builds a consensus. By the time the playoff rankings start, peoples perspectives and ideas are heavily influenced by ESPN propaganda.

This leads to grossly overranked SEC teams, filling the field with some good SEC teams, but also with bad SEC teams. Example: 2024: Tennessee (this was a very poor team, that you only think is good becasue ESPN propaganda is highly effective)
2025: Oklahoma and Alabama probably shouldn't have been ranked, they weren't nearly as good as teams like Utah, BYU, Notre Dame etc (remember when ESPN propaganda had everyone fighting over Notre Dame vs Miami, forgetting that 2 awful SEC teams actually took Notre Dames place in the playoffs)

That's propagada. It isn't a poll problem. It isn't a playoff ranking problem. It's Americans that don't realize that powerful media companies tell us how to think. We are all susceptable to this. None of us are unique. ESPN is more poerful than the other media companies because from the 80s through the 90s they built their reputation as a "third party" voice, an independent organization - so collectively, we inherently trust them. In the past 25 years step by step they've transformed from a company that loves sports, to company that hates sports and aggressively loves/pursues profits.

You cannot have an honest discussion about this ranking stuff until you understand this basic principle of how propaganda works.

And I'm not asking you do not just enjoy yourself and wonder if Tobi or Stephen Daley will lead the team in sacks. Sports are fun, so carry on with your enjoyment. Just know something: ESPN is trying to convince you and the rest of the world that an Ole Miss team that is a 0 on defense and a 8.5 on Offense is a top 10 team, while a Wisconsin team that is a 9 on defense and a 2 on offense is a "horrible, awful team that is an embarrasment to Penn State and proof thay aren't good". That's all. It's really that simple.

Illinois got 50 poured on them and we heard for weeks how awful the Big 10 team is and what a tragedy it is that Illinois was still ranked. Ole Miss just gave up 50.
Colton Joseph threw 3 interceptions against a team with a Pulse and it's proof Wisconsin is awful, meanwhile Sam Leavitt can throw 3 interceptions against Lousiana Tech!

Propaganda. It's propaganda fellas, it's not bias, It's blatant lies from a company desperately seeking increased profits. They' arne't an indepdent observer. They ARE the SEC, it is their product and they're selling it to us. When companies sell us their product we all intrinsically know they shouldn't be trusted. Then why are we trusting ESPN? It is NOT bias. It's a company selling us a prdouct, and they're using lies to do so!

Thanks for reading my TedLecture.
