Good story. I can attest that this happens a lot more often than you would think. Back in 2005, I was part of a Citizens Emergency Response Team. We were asked what we most feared. I listed a major hurricane in New Orleans (katrina), a major hurrican in South Florida (three near misses but two on the west coast), a pandemic (COVID kinda sorta), a mass casualty event in DC like a dirty bomb (not yet), and some form of civil unrest (current Administration). The CERT was discontinued in 2008. I have argued for preparedness and not resilience since that day. That argument fell on deaf ears at the Federal, State, and local level and continues to do so. I live in Prince William County Virginia and have a background in EH&S, training, respiratory protection, as well as working with occupational medical doctors. My first job, even before graduating college, was abating an encephalitis outbreak in Ventura County, California. I learned a lot about public health then.

Tilting at windmills story. Rings true that no one would listen to her and sorry to say wouldn't even if she was a certified scientist. Well thought out story.

Also, she is a middle school teacher but her class on ecosystem dynamics and keystone species sound more like a college level course than something for middle schoolers.

Excellent story. Great pacing. Very cool use of the signals nature gives us but everyone ignores.

the thing about the birds rings true. Way before high tech weather instruments, farmers used to tell the weather and season by watching birds. Old time farmers could tell the weather, if a storm was due, how bad it would be, if there was drought coming, or if there would be snow, and if it would be deep or light,, if there were dangerous predators in the area, or large insect swarms, all kinds of things by watching birds and the sky. All of these things have scientific reasons behind them, a lot of which we are only just looking at today.

this was an excellent story, well thought out and plotted. Problem is that most of the structures we have in place to act as warnings, do not react quickly or efficiently. The main character of the story did all she could, but no one who could do anything listened or took action. Humans have instincts and pattern recognition, and most people ignore both. Unfortunately that is why most people who do notice things choose not to say anything, because they know it will be futile. I really liked this story because it showed how regular people reacted and worked together. I liked how the story was not the end of the world apocalypse, but more along the lines of the zombie outbreak happening, but finally being overcome and handled by authorities.
