I've built hundreds of powerglides over the years. Used to convert Chevys to 400s in the 70's and 80's and discard the glide because nobody wanted them. Then converter technology started to change and the glide was back. Now the dominant trans is racing. I run a 1.96 glide in my 68 Firebird, or a 400. They both run mid 10s in the quarter mile, but the glide is more consistent. With the bolt on bellhousing,Fords, Mopars, even Mazda rotaries race a glide!

The GM Powerglide was bulletproof. The GM bean counters were idiots to kill the Powerglide.

We had dozens of cars with the trusty PowerGlide, I have overhauled hundreds of automatic transmissions TH400 TH350 C8 C6 TF6 TF8, but very rarely a PowerGlide, mostly reseals on those, they just wouldn’t break.

Thank you for your interesting and Very Well Done history lesson! Old guy here: who was deep into street racing in the early 70's & don't recall anybody running a Powerglide then. Might still be great today for bracket racing, but Turbo 400's (plus of course the upgraded GM powerplant under the hood & rear gears) is what let us leave the other guys behind 55+ years ago 😉!
So Happy & also Blessed to have survived this long and still reminisce about the great muscle car era in my reckless youth.

I had a '66 Chevelle that had a Powerglide behind a 283 V8. A friend had a '70 Nova with a 230 6 cylinder and Powerglide

5:15: The Turboglide was NOT a three-speed, but a variant of Buick's shiftless Dynaflow.

I bought the nicest 63 Chevy impala I have ever seen in 1981. It was all original with a 327 and a power glide. I was in high school and at 16 years old knew very damm little about a power glide and was skeptical about it . Once I started talking to my older drag racing friends they all told me that Trans is one of the best you could get in the day and it won't come apart on you and you can't tear it up. They were right . Best damm car I ever owned and I have been kicking my self since the late 80s when I sold it.

the aluminum pg was a beast first few years had a rear pump so it could be push started ! the ones with the holes in the bell housing are air cooled and there was one with a manual valve body no auto shift

I've had several old Chevys with Powerglides and they were all trouble free. If I were to look at one today and someone subbed it with a later transmission, I would walk away.

Had a 68 impala with the powerglide transmission it was indestructible! 168k miles when I sold it to a young fella in 1975 and saw it still running around in 1980 when I got out of the Marines and visited home again.
