Ford Took Shelby's Engines Away — Then Watched Them Explode

Shelby-built Tunnel Ports won Daytona and Riverside. Factory-sealed crates from Dearborn mostly exploded — and Jerry Titus walked to Pontiac. Did the 1968 Trans Am crown go to Chevrolet because the engine was too peaky, or because Ford wouldn’t let the racers race? And if Dearborn never takes the engines away, does the Boss 302 even need to exist? Engineers or executives — drop your verdict. I read every comment. #Boss302 #TransAm

Ford Motor's executives deserve all the credit for the failure of the 302 Tunnel Port. Had Shelby been able to work with it, with his engineering team they would have most certainly addressed the engine's flaws.

Ford should have left the people that knew how to build engines build the engines

LET ME EXPLAIN SOMETHING TO YOU ...
Chevy didn't do shit. We, the hobby stock drivers in Michigan were building the 302 way before Chevrolet engineers ever heard of it. In Flint, Michigan, we would go to Wolf Brothers Junk Yard and pick up most of the parts we needed, a 327 block, a 283 crank, and camel back heads, then have Flint Piston grind us some 12-to-1 pistons, a 375 cam, and pick up a set of solid lifters. If you went to 1/4 mile tracks in Whitemore, West Branch, and so on, you would see us running them every weekend. They were an amazing engine, running closer to 500hp that ever advertised. They would build RPM's faster than any other engine and had great torque. So when we hear Chevy-Chevy-Chevy, is gets old fast.

Ford gave me the cars to do the comparison. My 82 mustang had torque almost all the way up. It didn't matter how slow the engine turned, you could pull all the way and I was able to shock people with that care even as underpowered as it was. The 96 was kind of a miss. Yes, the 4.6 was a good engine but somehow the 200 horse power wasn't impressive until you really had the RPM. Now the Dark Horse 302 manual was a whole different animal. It's most impressive when somebody crowds your backside. Put it in third and floor the gas. Once you hit 2500 RPMs that engine pulls and would pull up to the rev limit of 7500 RPMs I can see how that engine back around 1970 would take the lead and keep it in stock form. The only flaw with it was I had to learn how to drive it and don't make a power call from the engine unless there were enough RPMs for it to make power. Until I learn that, I wasn't happy with the engine.
To answer the question, you need power no matter how fast the engine is turning. Peak horse power is impressive but not real useful in the real world. Shifting gears takes time and any shift you can skip is a gain in speed.

funny how the Tunnel Port in big and small block was never required to have a street version....

Pontiac shouldn't have even been able to run in Trans am in 1969 but, they used a loop hole that Canadian Pontiacs used Chevy engines. By doing this Pontiac was allowed to use the Z28 engine in firebirds. Then The rules were changed in 1970 to allow larger engines to be de stroked to fit the 5.0 liter rule.
