  Carl Sagan is the original author of the book Contact. He passed away 7 months before the movie came out in theaters.

  the end of the movie says "for Carl" that's Carl Sagan who wrote the novel "Contact". He was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, and science communicator renowned for popularizing science and advancing planetary research. He contributed to NASA's Mariner, Viking, and Voyager missions, co-designed the Pioneer and Voyager messages, and was a founding member of The Planetary Society and authored over 20 books.

  I love that they mention how Hollywood has cashed in on alien films for years... and here we have John Hurt and Tom Skerritt, who were both in Alien.

  Carl Sagan is the reason we have &quot;that pale blue dot&quot; picture from the early space explorations,.when he led NASA to, instead of only researching the cosmos, turn around the camera on Voyager 1 to take a picture of earth &nbsp;- our home -<br>Carl Sagan was truly a very brilliant, and very wise man and humanitarian.

  This was my father’s favorite movie and he was so stoked to show it to me as a kid. I watch it every so often for him.

  Fun fact. At the end of the alien encounter she says &quot;What happens now?&quot;. Matthew says the same line in Interstellar at the end of the tesseract scene. Always believed that was a nod back to this movie. :D
