You know what's crazy, I never thought of the guiding wind mechanic as a hud feature because it just naturally fits so well with the series.

i feel like sucker punch has perfected the open world exploration. exploring and finding shrines and alters are so rewarding. side quests arent just fetch quests and they are all pretty indepth. im 30 hours in and i still keep finding things to do and i've only beated 2 of the 6 yoteis.

“There’s no fat in the world” perfectly explains this open world. No wasted space, nothing feels repetitive to the point where it’s HW, and side quests feel purposeful!

This game, along with Tsushima, is literally one of the best distraction games I've ever played. And I mean that in a really good way!! I'll set a marker to progress the story, and on my way there, im distracted like 10 times and 3 hours go by before I even make it to my original objective. It's truly something special and NEEDS to be studied by other studios. Cough* Ubisoft Cough*

I love the idea of removing the HUD, guiding wind as a map or mission tracker, no journal or at least making it more immersive with the card system, weather effects on the map and more immersive mechanics that are somewhat unique to this series

I actually don't mind the shamisen because it dosen't just tell you where something is even if it gives a general direction. I also interpret the wind as Atsu's mom guiding her and that fits thematically with the shamisen.

Couldn’t agree more about the Nayoro Wilds section - that might have been my favourite part of the game. Just the peaceful and chilled vibe up there - it worked so well. You could really immerse yourself among the Ainu’s. Loved how you could just sit and listen to that story teller as well. Also the soundtrack up there is incredible, fits the vibe perfectly.

I spent a good portion of this game just riding with the wild horses in the grasslands.

Really agree on the Ainu Region. It really reminds me of Kear Morhen Valley from Witcher 3 in a way and that holds a special place in my heart

When I replayed Tsushima not too long ago, I really enjoyed the zen of exploration, although the sheer number of collectibles and activities put me into Checklist Mode about halfway through.

Yotei never let that happen, as i didn't do Checklist Mode until after credits rolled. It just always laid out enough breadcrumbs so that I always had a new location to ride toward, but never so many that I felt like I needed to catch up. There was always a couple of distractions along the way, but it never felt like too many. The Golden Bird was rare enough that I always felt like following it. Even the way activities weren't numbered (except the ainu artifacts) always kept the possibility of more to discover on the table even after everything was discovered.

And so many visual cues. If something catches your eye, go toward it as it's probably something. It's definitely the best wilderness open world. Yakuza/LAD has it beat for urban areas IMO because it's small enough and dense enough that distractions happen when your attention wanders.
