I imagine the military offered a hefty contingency payment in exchange for leaving swiftly and not coming back. Enough to easily cover the cost of the abandoned possessions.

Quite some years ago I was in Adak, Alaska for work. One night we went up to the military base to do some exploring. (PC speak for we were shitfaced and decided to have some fun and explore. Not ONE did any sort of vandalism). This was quite a few years after the closure so let's say that things were not in pristine condition, mostly from weather. Because the population in Adak is so small there was very little - well, comparatavely little - vandalism. Mostly it was due to the weather. The base library still had all the books in it for example. The nerd that I am went absolutely insane and collected wayyyyyy too many books, intending to bring them back with me. Based on the fact that I had quite a few guys carrying them with me tells you that I went a little over the Alaska Airlines weight limit so no, not too many of them made their way back home :-)
The amount of stuff left behind was staggering. A friend of mine made a deal with a skipper on a tugboat, hauling a whole house batterybackup unit for him to Seattle. We spent something like 3 hours hauling that thing out of the house and onto a trailer (this was not during the base exploration, mind you). This was done with the AleutCorp (current - or at least then - owners) permission.

Some houses in the living area were maintained for workers on the island. Others were left to the elements. The ones who were "maintained" had a very serious rat problem though. I have travelled the world but I have nowhere seen as acute of a rat problem as was in Adak. Possibly not a strange thing, considering neighbouring island.

Thing was though, during the military evacuation every house was lust locked up and left as-is. Apparently it was cheaper to buy new stuff than transport everything back to the mainland...

Expenses like that though, massive as they are, are like 0.000000000000000001% of US military spending. Enjoy your healthcare.

Reminds me of Sanctuary in Fallout 4. The vault should be nearby.

When the U.S. Military says you are being reassigned ,leave everything except you clothing and other very personal items because you will be compensated for every penny. You follow Orders. Your new housing will be furnished with all new furnishings and appliances. Have been through it before.!!!

A lot of military housing had tons of asbestos in them. And it cost too much to remove it. And fix them up again. So they just abandoned them. That happened by where I live. There was 27 houses and they ended up tearing them all down. And nothing has been done with the land.

Another great one. I was surprised to see it pop up, because I saw your earlier video of the drone footage you took of this place, and the guy who met you on the way out who had known you were there. Cool footage; I'm a sucker for well-made urbex, and it's nice that when you talk, you impart info, and sometimes you just let the visuals speak for themselves. Awesome! And the colors are truly amazing. Here in N. GA, the fall colors won't start for a while, though our poplar has been losing leaves for a month already; it just turns bright gold in the fall. We do have a gi-normous maple, but it's a silver maple, so it also just turns gold. It hasn't started dropping leaves yet, but when it does start, it'll still be shedding them come xmas/new year. There aren't a lot of red fall leaves around here, damn it.

Considering weather extremes, that town and property has held up extremely well. 😮
