  The Matrix is a timeless masterpiece. The Matrix is one of those rare perfect films in which not a single frame is wasted.

  If you watch the movie in reverse. You can see how a flying guy in a cool black cape becomes a hacker.

  Everything The Oracle said came true.  She told Neo that he wasn't The One yet, as he was 'waiting for something, your next life maybe', and that either he or Morpheus would die.  In the end, Neo did die and was 'resurrected' into his next life, where he became fully 'The One'.  This has been perhaps my favorite movie of all time.  Before seeing it, I'd never felt a reason to watch any movie again, but now I've watched this one many, many time.  It never gets old.

  When this movie came out it was literally a "paradigm shift" (for once that phrase under-sells the true impact) in pop culture and movie making. Much like Die-Hard a decade before, The Matrix had immense cultural impact. It changed how movies were filmed, it introduced Hong Kong style action cinema to the general Western audiences, pushed forward special effects (google how many films have Bullet Time), it altered fashion (ninja tech chic streetwear was all the rage), it made heroes out of hackers, and of course the quotes, my god, everyone was quoting this movie. It touched on themes of the police state, the dangers of AI, the importance of resisting even against overwhelming odds, touched on the concept of what is identity and transgender themes, it even sparked philosophical debates. This film had an astounding impact that can't be overstated.

  I watched this in theaters in 1999 as a high school student. BLEW MY MIND and changed how I looked at the world. American Beauty had similar effect at the time.

  The green tinge always represents being inside the Matrix. In the lead up to the cinematic release, they had an ad campaign with the tag line “The Matrix has you.”  And the Warner Bros logo was green. That was the first time that it had been shown in a non standard colour.
