  One of my civilian supervisors at Edwards told me about living in tents at the edge of the lakebed during the week. Also, the mechanical gauges in the jet tended to stick, so one of the engineers made a panel knocker from a a doorbell mechanism. Another story some of the old heads would tell me was the Bell test pilots took great delight buzzing past the bomber training pilots while wearing a gorilla mask and smoking a cigar. The reason: They knew if the students came back from the bombing range started telling stories about seeing a propeller-less aircraft being flown by a cigar smoking gorilla, no one would believe them and they&apos;d probably get washed out of training.

  I worked at Bell Aerospace in Wheatfield NY back in 1983. There were old timers there that worked on the XP-59A. The one guy told me about the phony propeller that they put on it during transport. They were retiring at 7 to 10 per week. Some of them told me about the German scientists brought over during Operation Paperclip. Many of the former American soldiers resented the arrogant German scientists in the their white lab coats and German secretaries. Some would bruskly bump shoulders with them in the hallways.

  Construction of the XP-59A took place on the top floor of 2495 Main Street, Buffalo. This structure (designed by Alfred Kahn) had previously served as a Ford production plant (1917-1931) and thereafter both Bell and Hercules Motors who produced diesels for the US Navy. After WWII it served Trico wiper blades until 1988, thus it is known to Buffalonians as the &quot;Trico&quot; or &quot;TriMain&quot; building.

  Great vid. Very interesting to see all that development from the brilliant mind of Whittle.I saw a YP 59 at Chino with a sign saying that it would be restored to fly. That would be a very historic event, if it happens

  Two great pieces of equipment that came out of Britain, this Jet Engine and the Cathode-ray Tube which allowed for clearer radar return and to go onto the development of Television and the Micro Wave Overn.

  I remember reading about two RAF officers on seeing the aircraft for the first time . One asked how it worked , the reply was, &nbsp; it works like a Hoover old boy !

  Lack of horsepower was a problem with just about all the failed experimental aircraft in the USA during the WWII era. &nbsp;Other difficulties as well, but lack of power was the main common flaw. &nbsp;The centrifugal flow engine was limited but the axial flow has taken off to what we see today. &nbsp;thanks. &nbsp;Great History Channel vid.
