I hate seeing women saying that a poorer man will be safer/ treat you better. The rich man can abuse you with HIS money. The poor man can abuse you with YOURS.

The only empathy you need to have — is to YourSelf!

Start there, not others.

I recognize this behavior in a man in my husband's friend group. He dated this really nice person (she had high empathy with low self esteem) and got his hooks into her. After love bombing her initially he started refusing to carry his share of household finances, chores etc because she made a higher income and could afford to. I told her right off the bat she could do better and kept telling her. Eventually she left him and said I had helped her see her value. I recognized the pattern of behavior after the numerous relationships I've seen him in. His friends feel sorry for him, I feel frustrated they accept his behavior and ultimately support it by continuing to support him as a friend. He's a loser and he knows it, so he looks for relationships to make him feel more powerful. Thank you for your video, even though I recognized the pattern I couldn't articulate why his behavior is so abhorrent to me.

Therapist here. A client of mine had a husband like that. She moved out. He tried all the abusive tactics to get her to come back but it didn't take. Then, after a year, he actually started cleaning up his act. Got a better paying job, became a respectful and decent husband again. Two years later, it still sticks.
But she had to leave and stay gone before he changed.

There are men who also just use aggression to get what they want.

In the states, we also call it “Nurse with a Purse” because so many financially stable nurses take on rehab husbands “I can change him” mindset and a relationship with the potential instead of the actual man. I bankrolled my man thru two pregnancies and he was non participatory with the kids. Wow. Was I blind? Then he cheated and we had two small children. He was verbally abusive and then it started to to affect our kids.. finally left. And lost a lot of money to my ‘husband’ smh these manchildren are awful.

I think this guy is failing his tests so he doesn’t have to take more responsibility in the relationship. Think about it: she pays for everything and also takes care of everything in the house. Now, why would he give up that setup when all he has to do is keep failing his exams and let her take care of him?

Trauma bonds are a weird entity and know no financial restraints or bounds.

My dad was almost like that dude. He was super controlling financially, though he didn't earn enough to cover even his own needs for food. When I was a kid, he always made me recount every penny after returning from a shop, accused me of stealing money and lying about the prices, etc. Moreover, he always got himself the best pieces of food, often including my share, because "he was bigger, therefore needed more food". The story about a pizza hit way too close to home. To this day, I get triggered in a split of a second, when somebody tries to eat my share of food. Yep, true victim of a child food abuse.

My initial reaction to this was RUN! RUN NOW! Because he will not change. You will be carrying him ALL YOUR LIFE if you stay in that "relationship." And don't be surprised if he secretly finds someone on the side that he can tell his sob stories to, all the time while staying with you because you're supporting him.
